2nd Trimester

speaking of WIC

Please no flames- it's an honest newbie question. Embarrassed

One of the girls I work with has three children and she told me that she used WIC to help supplement her income. She said that she gets it for herself (while breastfeeding) and each child up to 5 years. She told me that I should use it while I'm on mat leave.

I don't know the first thing about WIC. What I thought was, that there were income restrictions or if you were not married then you could do it??

I am only getting 130$ a week for the first 6 weeks then nothing for the remaining 6 weeks. Anyone have more information?

Re: speaking of WIC

  • The restrictions vary by locality.  Call your local health department and they will be able to help you

  • WIC is income based if you qualify for it you can start receiving benefits now.  I'm currently on WIC and its awesome :)  The easiest thing to do is call your local WIC office (usually located in the health department) and see if you might qualify.

  • I looked into it for the state of MA and luckily? we make too much to qualify. Hopefully the link below will help - I think it's a little different for every state?

  • I think it mainly is dependent on your income.  You can have a two parent household, but you still can only have a gross income of a certain amount.

    Here is the website.

  • I don't know much of anything about it, but my understanding was that there were income restrictions as well as requirements that you be at a certain nutritional risk.

Ok, This was very helpful. It looks like we are over the qualifications too. I guess it doesn't hurt to look into these things. I am really happy that they have a program like this for pregnant mothers.

    Thanks Ladies!

  • They do have income guidelines.  Your drop in pay combined with DH's pay might still be too much to qualify.

We did not qualify when we had DS.  I thought maybe we'd qualify this time since DH got a new job and makes a lot less....still don't.   I don't know about other places, but here it seems like you have to be dirt poor to qualify for anything.  My assistant (who makes ever so slightly less than I do) is a single mom and doesn't even qualify, which surprised me.  So apparently my DH would have to be unemployed and MAYBE if I worked at my job just part-time I'd qualify, lol.

  • I would still go into a WIC location and apply even if their website says your household income is too much.  The first time I applied (shortly after my son was born) I didn't bring any paystubs or anything- they just asked me how much I thought my DH's net income was and I was approved.  I've since had to bring proof of income but either way I think they just really want to be able to help women and their kids if they can.
