baby wearing in winter

how do you do it when the weather calls for coats?  is your coat big enough to put baby in the carrier and then put the coat over you guys?  (for a front carry obviously).  just wondering how this works or if you babywear less in the colder months or if you just wait till you get inside a place where it's warmer and you can take your coat off to put on the carrier?

  • When they're little the coat will probably just fit over them.  You still want to dress them pretty warm but they're extremeties need to be kept more warm than the rest so it can be tricky without that.  I think there is some kind of "carrier coat" that you can buy though.

  • I've done it both ways - either wear them under my coat and zip up as much as possible, then toss a blanket over the top, or just use the carrier.  Depended on what we were doing and what seemed the easiest.

  • Usually I just wore a coat big enough to fit around both of us.

I'm really interested in the Peekaru for this time around, though.

awesome!  so you can wear your coat over still if it's that cold out but don't have to worry so much about zipping or extra blankets?

and holy crap i just realized you can wear it with baby on your back too!!  okay that's cool.  :-D

  • I've worn both my mei tai and Beco carriers while wearing a winter jacket under the carriers and my DS also wearing a winter jacket while in the carriers.  But those were times when it wasn't extremely cold, like it is today (5 degrees!)  and I wasn't outside for too long.

  • I wear one of DH's fleece things because I don't do a lot of hanging out in the winter.  It's mainly from car to building or maybe a block or two to a friend's house.  You wouldn't believe how warm a baby will keep you!
  • I haven't done it in the extreme cold but I just wear a thick fleece and bundle LO.
  • My coat never fits over even when they're small. I guess either I'm too fat or my coats don't have much extra room in them. I just bundle her up so she's warm enough on her own and then keep my coat open. The part of me that it covers is kept warm by the coat and where my coat is open I have a little baby bundle keeping me warm.

  • This is A right before I took N out into the snow to play a couple of weeks ago. It was in the teens and we were out for probably an hour and a half. She snoozed peacefully the whole time and was warm as toast when we came in and I took her out.

I took her out much like this when we were in MN as well and were going to go on a sleigh ride near my inlaws house. It was easily in the single digits and windy. I didn't have the jacket with us so I put her in two tops and brought a blanket that I kept over my front that time. She did just fine then too. I never found myself getting cold either.

She's wearing a long sleeved shirt and the jacket, baby legs, socks and a pair of fleece pants. If the jacket hadn't had a big fleecy hood I'd have put a hat on her.
