Any crazy NY quirks?

I like to empty my fridge of old/expired condiments, and I've already done so this morning.

    FI's family hides a quarter out in the lawn right before midnight and then go out to find it.

    It's supposed to bring you good luck to "find" money right when the New Year begins.

    I'm thinking it doesn't really work if you know exactly where to go get the quarter.  But I sit there quietly sipping my chamapagne.
