I do. I leave it on all the time....mostly for background noise. S and I will be in the playroom (tv is in the living room) but you can still hear it. I guess I never realized how dependent on noise I am. Part of my NY resolution is to have to the tv on less and maybe the radio/cds on more!

I admit.. it is on almost all day. And if it isn't PBS or Nickelodeon, it is a DVD. It is mostly background noise and Pearl is in an out of the room.
Maybe because I have so many kids (LOL) but I like QUIET. Ours is almost never on. Lila watches some TV in the mornings in the playroom and Ian plays Wii before school and then the TV goes off until after the kids are in bed most days.
You may find once you turn it off that you like the quiet too.
ours is on all day...it's a noise addiction. we're rarely paying attention, so we could easily turn it off I guess!
Maybe this is a good resolution for us!
This.
I will admit, DS's morning routine revolves around the Disney Channel, but after a few shows, it goes off.
I feel distracted when it's blabbering in the background.
I used to, but I recently went to a lecture about tv and kids that may make you think twice about having it on all day, even if it seems your kid(s) are not watching it. The guy giving the lecture (this guy: https://people.umass.edu/a329000/DanPage.html) said that background TV counts as "exposure" and does alter the way kids pay attention, play, and learn, even if they don't appear to be watching it. It also alters how you and a parent interact with them, pay attention to them, etc even if you think it doesn't.
This guy was not anti-TV AT ALL (he helped develop Sesame St, Dora, Blue's Clues, Super Why, etc), but he did make some interesting points about screen time and young kids, especially babies. Kate watches one or two 30 minute shows a day on average, and I try my hardest not to let Ben watch when she is (HARD!) because he scared me about how much more exposure younger sibs get because of the older ones.
Ours is on a lot more than I'd like to admit. Not all day, but I'd say for 2 hours or so in the morning, another hour or two mid-day, and then sometimes several hours in the evening...always on Nick Jr.
There are studies that show that even having the TV on as background noise alters the way parents and kids interact (i.e. both parents and children speak FAR fewer words, which may be how frequent TV-watching can affect language development in some kids), and there are almost 100 different studies that all document a negative impact on behavior for kids who watch a significant amount of TV each day.
Knowing all of that, I feel more guilty having the TV on as much as it is--we haven't always been that way, but since DD2 was born, it's just so much harder to get anything done around the house or get any time to myself, so I end up letting DD1 watch more than she should most days. She's very smart, has a huge vocabulary, and does plenty of playing and reading every day as well, but now that DD2 is here, I really shouldn't make excuses for it because now it could affect her...

Our TV is on all day if we're home. DS will watch it a lot too, but at some point I always turn it off of his shows and onto something he doesn't care about.
When he's at my ILs house, I'm sure they leave the TV on all day for him to watch and don't make him not watch which drives me insane.
