Music and baby

Has anyone been playing music for their baby?  I want to, but I am not sure if baby can hear it yet.

Any thoughts?

Re: Music and baby

  • How far along are you?  They say that the baby can hear starting somewhere in your 17th week and definitely by 18 weeks.  I was so excited my baby got to hear Christmas music this year :)

  • I don't play it specifically for LO, but I have started listening to classical music outloud.
  • I think by about 16-18 weeks the baby can hear it.  I asked my Dr. at 18 weeks and he said the baby should be able to hear it.  Are you feeling any movement yet (flutters?)  I started playing music--maybe around week 18?  And I could feel the flutters when I did it (particularly with Gershwin lol).  Last night I had all-out kicking to Frank Sinatra.
  • Oh, and I put headphones on my tummy.
  • We listen to classical music around the house, during meal times.  I don't know if the baby can hear it but I like the music so we're listening to it!  :)  I sing to the baby all the time though because I know he/she can hear me!  My DH says good morning to the baby too!  :)

  • We watched a Nat Geo documentary that said LO can hear "internal" sounds before external. Where you are, he can hear your voice, hb, stomach, breathing, etc, but not outside music yet.  If you put headphones on your belly, he will get the vibrations in the amniotic fluid but this video made it sound like that wasn't a pleasant experience for LO since they have pics of babies flinching, grimacing and burrowing to hide their ears.  However, if you play the music for you to hear and it relaxes you, you release positive endorphins that the baby can experience with you.  Once you get in your mid 20s, LO can hear deep, low sounds (like the bass in DH's voice). Later in your 20s, LO can hear music playing in your room.

ETA: I just remembered, they can hear the deeper tones when you sing along to the music and might recognize the song once they are born!

  • I was reading up on this and found that studies have shown that babies do respond to music.  But they aren't sure if the reaction is positive or negative. What I read recommended listening to music in the room (as opposed to say, headphones on the belly) and not too loud - nothing with a loud, strong bass line.  I play some softer music on the laptop while I'm surfing :)

No offense, but that company is trying to sell stuff and therefore is not the most reputable of places to search for how to play music for you baby.
