I'm due at the end of January with baby #2. I've been thinking about cloth diapering my baby. I spoke to my daycare provider, and she said she would happily "deal" with cloth diapers (as I know some won't or some states won't allow cloth diapers at daycare).
I'm thinking about going on Saturday to a local store that has cloth diapers and everything I would need to start out.
So, before I go, I'd like to have some information:
1. What kind do you use?
2. Do you have special detergent for cloth diapers?
3. What supplies do I need besides the cloth diapers?
4. If my daycare provider puts them in a plastic bag when she changes DD diapers, will they be okay to sit soiled until I can wash them when we get home? I don't want to spend a ton of money on CD only to have them get ruined right away.
THANK YOU!
Re: ? about cloth diapers
1. What kind do you use? We use a little of everything. I love flats, and fitteds with wool. But, for daycare, I would stick with pockets and all in ones.
2. Do you have special detergent for cloth diapers? Yes. I highly recommend either planet or rockin green. They've both been fantastic for us.
3. What supplies do I need besides the cloth diapers? A pail liner of some sort. We had bought cloth ones, but the waterproof layer peeled off, right now we're just reusing the same garbage bag until it gets a hole in it. Some people use pillowcases. You'll also want a wetbag for the diaper bag when you're out and about.
4. If my daycare provider puts them in a plastic bag when she changes DD diapers, will they be okay to sit soiled until I can wash them when we get home? Yep. I only typically wash 2 times a week now.
1. What kind do you use? ? ?We use AIO diapers b/c they are most similar to disposables (so less learning curve). Mainly Bum Genius, Blueberry and Nana's BOttoms.?
2. Do you have special detergent for cloth diapers? ? Nope, use ALL F&C. did use 7th Gen. Delicate Care for a while, but ALL works perfectly well....
3. What supplies do I need besides the cloth diapers? ? wipes, wetbag, CD friendly cream (NOrthern Essence Diaper Salve highly recommended, but we really only used it with the teething rashes).?
4. If my daycare provider puts them in a plastic bag when she changes DD diapers, will they be okay to sit soiled until I can wash them when we get home? I don't want to spend a ton of money on CD only to have them get ruined right away.?
?? ? yup. ?i found the poop plopped off better after having sat for a while. ?i wash 2 X/week. ?
1. What kind do you use? We use a combination of prefolds (currently yellow edge Green Mountain Diapers) or fitteds (currently one size: Goodmamas, Little Fancy Pants and BubuBebes) with a cover (Thirsties) and OS pockets (FuzziBunz and soon to be BG 3.0s).
2. Do you have special detergent for cloth diapers? I use All Small and Mighty Militry Free Clear (found only at military commissaries) because there are no optical brighteners in it. Some people use the regular All Free Clear
3. What supplies do I need besides the cloth diapers? If you use prefolds, you'll want snappis or diaper pins. A way to store dirty diapers (see below). Possibly cloth wipes (we just use baby wash cloths w/ a spray bottle of water). A good place to store your stash.
4. If my daycare provider puts them in a plastic bag when she changes DD diapers, will they be okay to sit soiled until I can wash them when we get home? I don't want to spend a ton of money on CD only to have them get ruined right away. Yes... They'll be fine. We only wash every other day. (I will wash this morning and then not again until Saturday morning) Between washes, I toss all dirties into a trashcan that has a Wahmies pail liner in it. When we're out and about, we use a wetbag (either PlanetWise or Happy Jacks) until we get home. When we have to, we use plastic grocery bags, but those are hard to come by around here, since we use reusable grocery bags.
1. What kind do you use? Mainly BG OS organic AIO which we LOVE, but we also have some Piddle Poddles fitteds and covers, and a few MonkeySnuggles pocket diapers. In addition to those, we have a few other fitteds and pockets that I don't love as much to recommend.
2. Do you have special detergent for cloth diapers? We use the same detergent on all our clothes. We use our store brand free and clear, which was recommended by this site: pinstripesandpolkadots
3. What supplies do I need besides the cloth diapers? I have 3 large wetbags, which I hang off the changing table to use in place of a diaper pail. Since we only CD part-time I don't have some of the other accessories such as smaller wetbag for diaper bag, cloth wipes, wipe solution, etc.
4. If my daycare provider puts them in a plastic bag when she changes DD diapers, will they be okay to sit soiled until I can wash them when we get home? I don't want to spend a ton of money on CD only to have them get ruined right away. My kids aren't in daycare, but I don't do anything to the diapers but throw them in the wetbag until laundry days. They wash up just fine. There might be stains, but I think that is hard to avoid with something a kid is pooping in, and you can always sun out stains if they bother you. I have heard some ladies on here have daycare providers that wrap each individual diaper in a plastic bag before placing in the wetbag and they seem to do OK.
Good luck.
1. What kind do you use?- We use Green Mountain Diaper prefolds and Motherease Sandy's diapers w/ the stay dry liner. We use thirstie covers at daycare and Kissaluvs Marvel & Booroi snap covers at home. Also, we choose to use cotton only diapers because you have less issues with detergent issues, repelling, stink and less sensitivity to diaper creams (although we hardly use them).
2. Do you have special detergent for CD? We use Country Save detergent on our cloths and CD. Its been over a year of us CD (we started from birth) and have had no issues.
3. What supplies do you need besides the CD? W/ prefolds we use a snappi. We also have wet bag- we have a large size for home and a regular size that goes to daycare to store dirty diapers. We also have a metal pail in our laundry room that has an old pillow case inside where we store our diapers when the wetbags are full until laundry day. We also use cloth wipes (aka baby washrags) (much easier then disposables plus we found they cleaned the baby better)
4. As for storage at daycare- get a wetbag- she'll just toss them in there after a change- poop and all. If your breastfeeding your baby you don't need to do anything but toss in the washer. Once they start solids, its actually nice that it sits for a few hours because the poop solidifies more and just rolls off into the toilet. Our DCP and our back up provider never saw a CD in their lives before us and they both agreed it was very easy and had no issues with it- they use our prefolds and the Sandy's fitted diaper for naps. Also, when my LO was BF they also said they were very impressed at the lack of no blowouts.
1. What kind do you use?
We use a real combo of diapers, but in the post-newborn stage our favorites are BumGenius 3.0 pockets. These are really daycare-friendly (and grandma friendly). For the NB stage we liked prefolds from Green Mountain Diapers, Thirsties fitteds in XS and covers from Thirsties and Bummis.
2. Do you have special detergent for cloth diapers?
We have tried a variety and now are using liquid Tide - no fancy stuff, the original type and it works great. There are more EF brands out there but this is reliable for us.
3. What supplies do I need besides the cloth diapers?
A plastic trash can, 1-2 pail liners (we have Wahmmies and love them), 30 cloth wipes or baby wash cloths, a spray bottle, diaper cream that doesn't have fish oil in it (so no Desitin, etc. but you can use Method, California Baby, etc.), a wet bag that's like 12" square for the diaper bag, and then take the peri bottle you will get from the hospital when you deliver your baby and use that to hold water for the cloth wipes for your diaper bag.
4. If my daycare provider puts them in a plastic bag when she changes DD diapers, will they be okay to sit soiled until I can wash them when we get home?
Yep, they will be just fine. We only launder every 2-3 days. When my mom watches DD she throws the diapers in an old grocery bag and then that night or even the next day we get to plopping any poop, taking out inserts, etc.
