2nd Trimester

Placenta Previa

Anyone else ever experience placenta previa?  Does it change in your 3rd tri?

I had the big U/S on Tuesday and OB is worried that placenta is too close to cervix.  I have to go back in 8 weeks for another U/S to see if it has moved higher in the uterus.  She said it's common and not to worry but of course I worry when they say not to.

Re: Placenta Previa

  • They said mine is low. It sounds like it is pretty common, and usually resolves itself in the next 8 weeks or so as the baby moves up.

  • I actually had some bleeding last week and had an u/s.  My placenta is also positioned close to my cervix right now.  My OB said that as my uterus grows, it should "pull up" my placenta to be further away from my cervix.  Maybe the same is also true for you.  I have my big u/s on Tuesday, so they were going to see if it had moved at all.  They did mention that I will probably be closely monitored.  Also, FWIW, my OB said it was NOT placenta previa bc my placenta was not covering my cervix, just positioned close to it.

Hope things get better for you!

  • ::disclaimer::  not to freak you out, but to be informative...

my BFF had COMPLETE placenta previa.  which means her placenta covered almost all of her cervix.  she had a history of dialating early with her 2 other daughters, so this put her at higher risk.  the risk is that if you dialate, your placenta will rupture and you will bleed out and you and baby could very well not make it by the time you know what's going on/get to the hospital.  she had a minor bleed and spent 6 weeks in teh hospital on severe bedrest until she had a c-section at 37 weeks.

the good news is that your OB caught it and is monitoring you.  you have a good chance of the placenta moving as your uterus grows.  only a small % of previas are complete, and a small % actually remain that way.

     (hugs)

there are lots of previa message boards out there for info and support :)

  • It looks like partial previa not complete previa so that's good news.  I'm hoping it does move up as the baby moves but I'm lucky my OB is watching it.  Thank you all for the comments.

  • This sounds just like me at my 20wk u/s with DS...low but not covering.  I had another u/s at 28 wks and it had grown up and away, then another u/s to check again.(maybe 32wks?) and everything was fine.  Nothing more was said of it and I had a normal vag birth.  So far it is the same this time....although that was at 12wks, so Im guessing(hoping) even by my 20wk it will be resolved.

on a good note.....since you get another u/s, you will get to see baby again!  :)
