Be sure the mattress fits the crib perfectly. An undersized mattress will
leave a gap along the side or end of the crib where an infant's head can get
caught, causing suffocation. To check the fit of a crib mattress, push it to
one corner. There should be no more than a 1? inch (4 centimeter) gap between
it and the side or end of the crib. If you can fit more than two fingers
between the mattress and the crib, the mattress is too small. Remember, the
firmer the mattress, the safer.
Thanks. That's what I was thinking. This is weird b/c I really had to stretch the sheet to get it onto the mattress, so I know we have a pretty big mattress but there's still a huge (3-4 finger) gap btwn the mattress and the crib rails. This makes me think the friggin crib was built bigger than normal. So, what should I do? Should I shove a bumper down between the mattress and the crib (not up where LO can suffocate on it). ???????
If you look at the inserts that came with the crib, it should tell you what size mattress you need. Some cribs are built smaller, and need smaller mattresses.

You need a bigger matress. Do not shove the bumper between, that is a big no-no.
Also, not all crib sheets are one size. You may need bigger crib sheets.

OK Thanks. I didn't realize there were different sizes. I'm glad I have a few months to get this fixed! And I'm glad I asked!

It should say on the back of the package what size mattress the sheets fit.
Re: If you already set up your crib...
I just found this online,

There really is no gap at all. The mattress is supposed to fit snug, and shouldn't be to easy to get out.
