Q from 3rd Tri: Bouncers v. Swings...or Both?

Do we need a bouncer AND a swing? This is our first baby and I'm just trying to figure out how much time she will actually spend in either and if it's necessary to have both before she's here. We plan to get the Graco SweetPeace swing, but recieved a travel swing as a gift already so we are goign to make sure she even likes the swing before buying the expensive one. The bouncer I'm not sure about - seems like I'd put her in there a lot to cook dinner, get ready, fold laundry, etc...but DH thinks why not just put her in the swing.

So bouncer v. swing - how much do you use them and is having both worth it?

  • we have both but so far my DS only likes his swing, i'm sure once he gets a little older the bouncer will be good. we plan to use the bouncer more once he starts eating cereal because we can feed him in that.

  • DS hates his bouncer right now but the swing is his favorite spot. Maybe when he gets a little older he will like the bouncer - who knows? He does a lot of naps in his swing, when I am doing stuff around the house I stick him in there. So I use it a lot.

It can work the opposite way with hatred for the swing too. You just never know.

A lot of years and a million tears finally led me to you.

  • We have both...DD hated the swing so we never used it.  She loved her bouncy though.  You just never know what they will/won't like.
  • We have both, but DD only likes the swing.

  • DS will hang out in the bouncy, but he's not in love with it.  He doesn't like our swing too much but will chill if he's calm when we put him in it.  He LOVES the swing my MIL has--it's the fisher price one that goes side to side as well as back to front.  I would skip the bouncy if you have to chose.
  • We got both at our shower. He wouldn't use either until he was 3 weeks old. He will tolerate the swing for a maximum of 10 minutes. It's the front to back only kind, I think he would like side-toside better, but whatever.

The bouncer he'll tolerate for longer now. I say get both, or borrow them to see which she will like, then buy accordingly?

  • We have both. Lo hates both. She shrieks when you put her in either of them. My sister and her friends call them "Ella's tourture chairs." :-) I'm hoping she grows to like them!

  • Both!  It's nice for a change of pace, although LO is not a big fan of the bouncer.  I really only use it when I take a shower since it's easy to bring into the bathroom.  But, I think it's definitely worth having it.  We use the swing tons, just make sure you turn it on high!
  • i would get both. we got both as gifts otherwise i wouldnt have bought both, but we have found good use for both of them.
  • We have both and LO LOVES his bouncer.  We picked this up on sale and it is the best $25 we ever spent.  He is only 9 days old, but he has his routine where he eats, hangs out w/ mom or dad, and then just wants to be snuggled in his bouncer.  He doesn't love the swing.  I do use the swing when I am alone with him and I need to take a shower, I put it in the door way so I can see him.  I think he will like the swing more once he is a little bit older, but right now we couldn't function w/o the bouncer.
  • I'm a big garage saler so DD has 2 different bouncers and a swing. The one bouncer is a papasan with no toys and I keep it in the bathroom. So if I have to go to the bathroom and she's awake I just stick her in that quick and she doesn't complain at all. Then the other is bigger and has toys and from 3-8 weeks she liked it but now she's much more mobile and doesn't want to just sit there, she wants to be more free to move. I'm sure we'll use it again to feed her in later on. As for the swing we bought one that goes side to side and forward/back and she hated the side to side but likes the forward/back. Each kid is different....GL!!

  • We have both...  but only because my SIL gave us hers.  I'm going to keep the swing downstairs and the bouncer upstairs.

  • LO loves both. The swing is good for long naps and the bouncy seat we use to play in or just to put her down in real quick to pee/make something to eat. She'll nap in that too. I'd say get both because like PPs have said, you never know what LO will like.
  • We have both and LO likes both of them.  Our swing plugs in so we have never moved it.  The bouncer is handy because I can easily move it to whatever room I'll be in.  For example, I put LO in the bouncer and take him into the bathroom with me while I shower.  That can't be done with the swing, obviously.
  • We have both. Our LO only JUST fell in love with her swing two days ago...Before then she hated it. Now she'll happily sit in it , whatching the mobile and coo-ing away. Yesterday she even fell asleep in it!

She still hates the bouncy, but I'm thinking she'll like it more when she able o sit up and look around better on her own.

  • I can't imagine not having both.  He loves both of them.  If your child likes a bouncy, it is awesome because it is portable.  The swing isn't as easy to move around.

  • We got a combo swing/bouncer from Wal-Mart.  The seat pops out and becomes the bouncer.  DS loves both, but I figured if he hated one I'd be ok and it's one less thing to take up space.
  • We have both and it is worth having both!! We put our 1 month old in the bouncer after he's fallen asleep and he'll sleep in there for awhile. He also likes the vibrating when we turn it on and that will put him to sleep at times. I got ours at a garage sale so if you don't get it at a shower, you can look around and find a cheap one. It is so worth it just to have options!

Our swing goes front/back and side/side. He loves the mobile on both our swing and the Fisher Price one my mom has.

  • we sent the bouncer  packing to grandma and grandpa's house.  i put DD in the swing when i want to do anything with both hands.  since she doesn't like the moby...
