Anyone planning on cloth diapering?

I know its a little early, but I'm toying with the idea of this and was just wondering if anyone else plans on trying it.

Re: Anyone planning on cloth diapering?

  • I am, I am just in the process of trying to decide what kind to go with and then starting to save up as kitis a couple hundred to get set up.  My mom CD back in the day of diaper pins and folding up the cotton rectangle, it is so easy now it is almost a shame not to.

  • I am doing it already with my first babe and it's going really well.  I never would have thought about doing it before hearing about it on the Eco Friendly Board.  We mainly use the Bumgenius one sized diapers and my DD has worn the same diapers from about a week after birth until now at 19 months old.  She was  8 pounds, 1 ounce at birth and they fit her then.

Jilliansdrawers.com has a great trial program so you can see if they work for you.

Good luck.  There is a lot of info out there.

  • Yes, we're planning to CD-- as the pp said, it's so much more convenient than it used to be, and I really like the idea of not adding more garbage to landfills.

  • We CD with DS.  We love it and will definitely do with with DC#2 as well.

It is a lot easier than I thought it would be and seems so much more comfortable for DS.

ETA: We use FuzziBunz.  The ECF board and the AP board have a lot of cloth diaper users if you want to ask particular questions.

  • We probably will because (aside from the issue of our environment) my DH's family seems to have an allergy to diapers! All the kids in his family have had to wear cloth diapers, so I am just going to assume this baby will be allergic to diapers too! LOL
  • We plan to. We did with DD, I don't know how much harder it will be with twins but I do plan to give it a try.

  • Yup, sure am. It can be a bit overwhelming when you start to look at all the different options, so make sure you do a lot of research. I liked the tutorials/FAQs on jilliansdrawers.com. You can also ask a lot of questions at the Eco-Friendly Family board.

We're planning on using chinese prefolds and Thirsties Duo Wrap covers. The prefolds are the cheapest cloth diapering option (about $1.50 per prefold), and easiest to wash, imo. The Thirsties wraps can be re-used for a few diaper changes before you have to wash them (unless you have a huge blow-out). The wraps only come in two sizes (which is great because there are less sizes to buy) and have snaps that adjust to fit the baby as it grows.

  • Yes, we're using CDs. We plan to use mainly fitteds and PFs though I'm going to have a few AIOs for the husband ;) I SAH so I don't see a reason not to use them, especially when it's beneficial to our pocket books as well as the environment.
  • Yes, we are. For the newborn stage, we will probably do prefolds with covers. We may throw a few fitteds into the rotation if I can score a good deal. We'll see how that goes before making decisions on what to do as LO grows.

FWIW, the EFF board has been very helpful, as has the theecofriendlyfamily.blogspot.com. https://pinstripesandpolkadots.com/basics.htm has been another helpful site.

  • We are! I did a lot of research even before I was pregnant and we're going to use the gdiaper. It is cloth on the outside, has a plastic snap in (so you can use the outside for a couple uses) and then you can either get cloth inserts, which we're going to use while at home or you can get a biodegradable insert which u can flush down the toilet while traveling or out for the day. Their website is gdiapers.com.

  • I am also very interested in the gDiaper.  I am interested in regular CD's as well.  I just started looking into it.

  • I cloth diaper DD and will the next child as well.  We use prefolds and covers which are cheap and the easiest for us to use.  I still use pampers when out or to tired to do laundry but try to CD whenever home
  • My friends CD their daughter with BumGenius so I'm VERY interested in using them for my child.  My mom CD'd both my brother and me because they couldn't afford anything else, and since she will be our childcare I'm hoping it will work out.

I know that sometimes plans don't always work out (like who knows if I'll HATE to CD?) but I really want to give CDing a solid try.  DH isn't so enthusiastic about it but he'll try it with me.

  • we would love to cd, not 100% sure if it will be feaible with newborn twins but we will definitely give it a try. ideally i would love to find a cloth diaper service to relieve some of the time associated with it at least in the beginning. but even if we can't find a service we will still try it.

  • we are giving it a go :)  my MIL is appalled, but she'll get over it!

My mom acted like I was crazy when  I started cloth diapering DD. I don't think she realized how much cloth diapers have changed since she did it with my brother. She is totally on board now.

  • I assume you've thought about this but if you will be using childcare you'll need to consider if they will be willing to do CD. We try to be pretty environmentally responsible but we definitely  both have to work and we were lucky enough to get DDs into a daycare we ADORE (so do they!) but they won't CD... Just a thought.

If you're going to stay at home then a hat tip to you (both for staying home and for CDing. :)

We CD DD, and will do so for the twins.  It will save us thousands of dollars, not to mention the rest of the benefits.

  • I started using cloth on DS at 12 months and am excited to start from a newborn with this baby.  I can resuse DS's one size diapers and have bought almost enough newborn diapers on sale for the new baby.  Not much extra work besides 2 more loads of laundry a week.
  • We'd like to do it for when we're home.  There there lots of comnpanies that make them and I'm just starting to read the reviews for them all on amazon.com.

    Yes, please.

We plan to CD. We will not use gDiapers, more likely a mix of fitteds, prefolds, AIOs, and pockets. Use the resources listed in PP, and feel free to ask over of EFF if you have questions.

  • The poop doesn't make your washer icky. Large stools are rinsed or shaken off into the toilet so there isn't much left. I mean you wouldn't throw out the clothes LO was wearing after a blowout would you? Of course not.

Also, https://nickisdiapers.com/ is my favorite store. Super helpful people.
