? re: amazon universal registry

i think i've heard some people on here have used this versus a regular amazon registry.  if you do it this way is there a way for people to go into your wishlist and check off that they bought something somewhere if they bought it not directly from the wishlist?  or does the item/store still need to match up in order to have it disappear from the registry?

i wish i was able to say "i want these things" and people can check them off as they purchase because i don't care where people buy them ya know?  that's my one big issue with registries, that it boxes people into buying from a certain place when they might find a better deal elsewhere..

anyway just curious

Re: ? re: amazon universal registry

  • I think that if they buy a universal registry item, they see it or see the link to it on your registry but amazon cannot keep track of the actual purchase (to see if they followed through and bought it). But I am pretty sure the purchaser can mark it as "bought" on amazon.

  • PP is correct. So when you register you can add something from amazon or from somehwere else. When a person buys anything on your registry, whether it is something on amazon or elsewhere, but doesn't buy it from amazon, they have to mark it as "bought". Then it comes off. I know for us this has come in handy with some of the older relatives that don't understand online shopping. Other people will tell them what's on there, they go buy it locally, and then someone removes it for them.

this is precisely what i was hoping was the case.  if someone wants to buy something somewhere they deem 'more convenient' (though i will never understand what's more convenient than online!!!) or finds a better deal than i did, makes no difference to me.  i know there was a huge thing with my kitchenaid mixer for the wedding because someone got a good deal on one through somewhere other than where my registry was from so getting it to come off the registry was this massive undertaking apparently..

yup yup!  i think they have a thing you can add-on to your brower - at least for firefox, where you can click a thingie on whatever page you're on and add it to your amazon universal registry.  because people are so much more familiar with amazon i find this a great bonus to my life.  :-)  ESPECIALLY if it's going to allow people to go in and check things off that they bought wherever they found it.  dh's family is out here and my family is in the western half of the state so it's nice for people to be able to go wherever they know if they don't like online stuff.  :-)
