xp ? re bottle warmer and sterilizer

I registered for and got both of these items, but now I'm thinking I won't need either and should take them back. (I plan to EBF but will be going back to work at 3 months and DH/babysitter will need bottles.) First with the bottle warmer, it says safe for breast milk, but does it thaw frozen breast milk or just warm refrigerated breast milk?  Worth keeping?Second, with the microwave bottle sterilizer I saw on a website that there is no real reason to sterilize your bottles as long as you have a full term, generally healthy infant. Can you use this for sterilizing pump parts too though?  Worth keeping?

Re: xp ? re bottle warmer and sterilizer

  • ive said this before, but i dont bother warming bottles at all so i personally would return that item. some people swear by it though so i guess it depends on what you like. i dont know about the sterilizer, we boil before first use and then just wash with hot water and soap or throw stuff in the dishwasher.

  • I love my bottle warmer.  We have the actual bottle warmer in the kitchen, when we were feeding BM at night we warmed it in a crock pot (so we could warm both bottles at once).
  • don't get rid of the bottle warmer.. you may plan to EBF but that doesn't always work out (I REALLY wanted to EBF but didn't make enough for my babies).  It is great to be able to make bottles ahead of time and just warm them up.  Also if you have to switch to exclusively pumping a bottle warmer is really helpful.

not sure about the sterilizer, I was always told that washing bottles in hot water was good enough.

  • about sterilizing the pump parts... get the sterilizing bags (medela) they are sure not to screw up the parts.
  • as for sterilizing pump parts-- i washed mine in hot, soapy water (so hot i wore rubber gloves) and then boiled them for 5 minutes once a month. my babies were fine! lol!

as for the bottle warmer... for the first few months, it was about just as easy and fast to put the bottles in warm/hot water to warm up. for multiples, you would want to have more than 1 bottle warmer anyhow. i had 2 that i borrowed from someone. i used them for a month or two when we did use the breast milk from the refrigerator. now we are on to formula and i don't need a bottle warmer at all. i just mix them with luke warm water. it wouldn't thaw the bm that is frozen because you will probably be using baggies for that (space). those you can just put in a bowl of warm water and they thaw out in minutes. it was nice to have the bottle warmers, but only for a little while when they were taking 6-8 oz at a time. it just took too long to warm them in hot water that way.

so, i might suggest returning it and getting other things you know you will need, then you can always go out and repurchase the bottle warmers if you want them later on.

  • I ditto the Medela steam sterilizer bags (Avail. for $4.99 at Target). I clean all my pump parts in it (add 2 oz. of water to bag and microwave a few minutes--easy, quick!!). Plus, you use the bags 20 xs each, so it's not like you have to use a diff. bag each time you sterilize.

  • I registered for the sterilizer and got it.  Obviously have not used it yet, but it seems like it will be as efficient as washing the bottles in hot water; think you can do an entire tray of bottles in 5 minutes in the microwave.

I had registered for the bottle warmer but took it off when I saw somewhere that they take too long compared to other methods.   I've also read that you really have to watch the temp so they don't warm the bottles too much.
