Breastfeeding

I just threw away over 300 ozs. of BM

Last night I thawed a baggie of BM to leave for my mom while I was gone.  LO hates the bottle and refuses to take it, but it makes me feel better to leave some milk just in case.  For some reason, I smelled the milk after it thawed.  It smelled sour!  The milk was only a month old... so I tried another bag of milk...soured too!!  I couldn't believe it!  I tried many more bags...all gone bad.

Sadly, I had to throw it all away.  What a waste of time!

  • I'm debating even telling you this, but what the heck -- it may benefit someone else who reads it.

The milk may still have been acceptable to and perfectly safe for baby if it was only mildly sour (ducks to avoid a punch).

But see here, 'cause it sounds like an excess lipase issue.

  • That sucks! Why do you think the milk went sour? So sorry you had to throw it all out.

This!  Did you feed it to your LO?  It may have been perfectly fine.  Mine smells "off" sometimes when I thaw it out but DS takes it just fine.

  • He refuses the bottle no matte what!  I think it went sour because we open our freezer a couple times a day.  I should have put it in a deep freezer.

  • Um...wow.  It was probably not sour at all.  That's really sad that you felt you had to throw it away.  Of course if your LO wasn't going to use it I suppose it's no big deal but you could have donated.  Thawed breastmilk alwasy smells sour IMO -- but actually soured breastmilk is like curl your toes, hold on to your breakfast disgusting smelling...and there's no mistaking it at all.

Also, just for anyone reading this - if you store your milk in your regular freezer the only precaution you should take is to store in the rear of the freezer and not near the door so your milk is not exposed to too many temp changes.

  • Yikes! Mine always smelled sour too, but it tasted fine and DS was fine with it. It's true that frozen BM has a different smell than fresh BM, but it doesn't mean that it's sour.

I would maybe compare the taste of fresh to frozen. I would think that opening the freezer door a few times a day wouldn't spoil your BM.
