First Bday Party Help...

Really, I hate this. I hate entertaining. We will have 15-20ppl for my LO's bday. Theme is Winter ONEderland and the food needs to be cost effective and easy to do in advance (we're having at my mom and dad's house). I was thinking about doing a chili bar as the main course. There will be 3 kiddos there - 2 other one year olds and a 2 1/2 year old.  Appetizers will be pigs in a blanket, shrimp cocktail and a fruit or veggie tray. Will also put out goldfish and a few other little snacks for the little ones.

* Is doing a chili bar a bad idea with kiddos? Anything you can suggest I could have out for the kids? My mom thinks chili is a bad idea with kids. Honestly, the last party I was at for a one year old, there were no other kids there and I don't remember the birthday girl eating anything besides some goldfish and her cake.

* What time do you like for kid's bday parties? I was thinking one-ish.

* Opening gifts at the party - yay or nay?

Sigh. I just wish I had an endless budget and a party planner. This is not my cup of tea.

Re: First Bday Party Help...

  • Chili is fine. If I took Jude to a b-day party, I would bring food with us for him, and not rely on the hostess to provide a menu for a 1 year old. The fruit and pigs in the blanket will be plenty for the older kid.

  • I would ditch the shrimp cocktail and go for something like a mac n cheese bake.. that would feed the kiddos and i think chili sounds great.. you could make the mac n cheese the night before and finish it in the oven at your parent's house..

i say Yay on opening presents and for the time i would do it after your LO's nap..
