2nd Trimester

Finally heard the HB! and need to gain weight...

I went a month ago to hear the HB of my little one but they couldn't pick it up yet, so they did another sonogram and everything was a-ok :) Today was my monthly appointment and they picked it up within about 2 seconds - sounded great at 147.

I was expecting to gain some weight since i'm out of my regular pants and into maternity pants.. well I was wrong - down another 3 pounds (5 pounds lost total now). I was told to gain weight! so now I need to have at least 2 protein drinks/shakes a day and try to eat more meals. I get full so quickly that i'm just not eating enough I guess -- anyone else having this issue?

  • Some days I can barely get anything in.  Try getting some liquid calories in with the protein drinks, milk, and juice.  Add butter, sugar, crushed nuts, and melted cheese to foods to help boost calories without increasing volume.
  • This is me. I was on the underweight side before preg and I lost 10 pounds due to m/s. I am now 23 weeks and I am 1 pound over my pre-preg weight. My OB is concerned but I dont seem to be gaining weight. I am going to start drinking ensure and hope that helps!

  • I'm down about 7 or so lbs right now... but my doc isn't too concerned since I'm eating healthy.
  • I lost a total of 20 lbs in my first tri, which was about 10 more than I really needed to be healthy.  At my last visit (17 wks) I had only added about 2 lbs back.  My Dr. said to continue to eat healthy and the weight will come.  The baby has checked out fine at all my visits thus far.  I agree with other posters to add cheeses to food items, but be cautious of over doing it because the additional fat can have an impact on your blood pressure and sugar count and can lead to problems down the road.  I would recommend eating small meals 5-6 times a time.  PB&J sandwiches are a great snack that adds calories but not a lot of fat, as are bagels with PB or cream cheese.  Also fruits (I personally LOVE apple slices with PB) are another good option.  GL and enjoy!  This is probably the only time in your life where eating is a sport! ;-)
  • I lost 15lbs in my first tri, so I was put on protein shakes and saw a nutritionist.  I'm up 2lbs as of my 16 week appointment but I have a feeling I will have gained more in a few weeks when i got into my 20w
  • My weight has been down too.  My doctor hasn't said anything yet, but I've been trying my hardest to put some weight on before my next appt.  I just don't feel hungry anymore and when I do get hungry, I fill up quickly.

  • As of my last appointment on December 2nd, I gained only a pound. Could have been due to morning sickness. However I have not had ANY morning sickness since right before Thanksgiving and I somehow managed to lose 3 pounds since my last appointment. I don't even know how it is physically possible after all the Christmas celebrations, but they don't seem terribly concerned since I am keeping everything down.

    Good luck !!
