Argh. So confused -- what did you feed your baby around 7 months?

We started solids at five months and right now, Collin nurses and has formula, and then has oatmeal or rice cereal (2 dry TBS with 2 oz. of milk) with a jar of fruit for breakfast or lunch, and then a jar of veggies for dinner.

I have been reading the guidelines for his age range and it sounds like I could start juice now, which he would probably like, and it says that they should be eating three meals a day, like 4 TBS of cereal with 2 TBS of fruit (so a small jar, I assume) for breakfast, a meal for lunch (like one of those stage two meals) and then 4 TBS of cereal with 2 TBS veggies for dinner. That sounds like a ton!

I also am not sure about when to start introducing things like baby yogurt or those melts and puffs, etc. He doesn't have any table food/veggies at all (except a random tiny taste of something like mashed potatoes at Christmas) but I would like to try him on some avocado.

I tried to ask our pedi at his 6-month appointment, but she is very adament that kids should not even have solids until 6 months, and was like just start him off with some cereal and some fruit, small amounts. He's a big eater, and beyond that now, and I want to make sure he's getting enough to eat. He's not the hugest guy.

Any suggestions?

  • We have avoided juice.  Now that she is a year, Jillian gets watered down juice from time to time but otherwise I'd prefer she drink water and eat fruit.

At 7 months I think we had started Jillian on a few finger foods like puffs.  There were also these rice crackers that she liked called Mum Mums that I got from WinCo.  They were easier for her to hold on to than picking up puffs.

  • My girls are eating sweet potatoes, carrots, avocado, pumpkin, pears, whole grain oatmeal, tofu, and rice cereal. We are doing two meals a day - one girl eats a lot more than the other, but I'm not worried about it since they are both drinking all of their bottles. They say a healthy baby will eat enough so not to push any more than they want to take.

We also just offered them mum mums last week and they loved them! It was so cute to see them holding their own crackers and eating them. I have started to put tiny pieces of finger foods (tofu or pears) on their tray. They don't really have the pincer grasp yet, but they are trying to do it, which I figure is good practice.

We have also avoided juice. My pedi said we want them to learn to like water just how it is instead of want sweet drinks. So far both girls hate water, but I keep offering it every single day.

I recommend the Super Baby Food book and the Wholesome Baby Food website as resources. Good luck!

  • We started solids at 6 months-baby oatmeal, mashed avacado, mashed bananas, and baked (and mashed) apples were his faves.

I waited 'til he as about 8 months to introduce cereal and crackers. I was paranoid about choking but I know most moms offer cereal earlier than that. He loved (and still loves) the Wasa brand flat bread/crakers.So yummy!

Re. Juice-We only gave him milk and water and now he will not drink juice, even if we offer it. From what I've read, it's better to avoid juice specially for their teeth, but of course it's up to you :-)

  • At 7 months I offered my dd a variety of homemade fruits and vegetables.  It was easier to steam it, blend it, then stick extras in a freezer tray.  That way I just microwaved it whenever I needed to feed dd.  At that age I probably fed her 2x a day and offered her mum mums or puffs.

If the consistancy of the vegetable/fruit I made was too watery then I would add baby cereal to thicken it.  HTH.

This is what we do too. :)

  • I don't know what is telling you to feed your 7 month old baby that much food.   According to the AAP, they shouldn't even start solids til 6 months so I don't know why anything would be suggesting that you should be giving so much only a month into it.

Feeding solids right now isn't about shoveling some certain amount into their mouths.  It's about teaching them to learn to enjoy flavors and textures and get the hang of chewing and swallowing.   It's not a race to get a jar of food into their stomachs.  His primary caloric intake will be from BM or formula until closer to a year old.

No reason at all to start juice any time soon unless he's constipated.

You can start real foods any time.  There's no need to do pureed baby foods ever if you don't want to.   Give him some pieces of thigns on his tray to see if he can pick them up.  Avacados are very hard to pick up though - they're slimy.  I've heard of some people rolling them in crushed up cheerios to give them some "grip".

Most things say to wait on dairy - cheese and yogurt - til at least 9 months and milk at a year.

Avoid egg whites too.  And no honey til after a year.

Just go with your gut on the amount.   I don't think I went to 3 meals a day til maybe 10 months.   It was hard to fit into the day with going out and doing things, and until he could eat more "real" foods, it wasn't worth the hassle.

Gerber's site did (whereas the Earth's Best guidelines were very vague), and like you, I raised an eyebrow. That seemed like WAY too much, so I figured I'd ask you wise Bumpies what you thought.

  • Yeah Gerber wants to sell baby food.  I wouldn't take their advice.   Look at the wholesome baby food site.   It's got good info!

  • I don't trust Gerber's instructions...too biased towards solids.

  • Wow, it sounds like you're really overwhelmed. I started out slow and only added something new like once a week, or at minimum, four days because of the four day wait rule. I know it's a lot to put on yourself, so just take it one food at a time.

We started with avacados, moved on to sweet potatoes, but the starches backed her up.

I didn't even really get going with the food program until about 8-9 months, so there's no real hard line saying what needs to happen when...just go at your own pace.

When it came to oatmeal, I stayed away from the commercial stuff because there's not much nutritional value left after they've been processed. So we did steel cut and cooked the snot out of it. Oatmeal is great for texture and you can add anything you want to it. We do apples, blueberries, bananas etc.

We also do whole plain goat yogurt as a base and mix in apples, blueberries and bananas. It's great stuff for Emmeline, and we use whole (for the fat) and plain (for the lack of sugar) and goat (because that's what I eat).

It's confusing at first, so just pick one food to try and make that your goal.

  • We also don't really do juice. She's had it, but maybe 2x? At seven months Isa was eating breakfast and dinner that consisted of maybe one jar in a sitting. I had also started to offer things like puffs and yogurt melts around this time. She was still nursing on demand, but it started to slow down.

  • I'm just really starting to look into all this too, so this is great info - thanks. ?:)

FYI Jenn - one tiny jar (of Earth's Best, anyway) is 2.5 oz which = 5 tbsp.?
