Small nursery - dark furniture too dark?

We have a very small nursery. Maybe 8 x 8??  The basics we need will fit. Originally I thought about white furniture so it wouldn't make the room too dark, but when we found out we are having a boy I thought it would be too girlie when he grows up.

Do you think dark furniture in a small room will make it look too dark? Do you think white would be too girlie?

I don't know what color we'll paint yet but I do know it will be very light.

Thanks!

Re: Small nursery - dark furniture too dark?

  • I think wall paint color will have a greater effect than furniture color.  My nursery's going to be pretty small too - maybe 8'x10'? - but I hadn't taken furniture color into consideration at all.

  • Our nursery is small too, like 10 by 11 or something. We are going w/ white for that reason.  Plus all the other furniture in our home is dark so we wanted to switch it up.

  • I think wall color will have more of an impact than furniture color. Try to keep the decor lighter and more airy and you'll be fine. Plus you can play with things like mirrors, etc to make the room look bigger. Personally I'm not a fan of white furniture for a boy or a girl.
  • i'm not personally a fan of white furniture. we have a relatively small nursery and are using dark furniture. i agree with the other posters that wall color and decor will make the difference. also, the "weight" of your furniture will make a difference - for example, a crib with the open slats makes it look less heavy in the room than an adult piece of furniture.
