Have u stopped working 2 keep ur kids healthy?

because of their kids getting sick in daycare?

My kids are sick all the time. I mean all the time. They were just put on a second does of antibiotic. It really isn't financially feasible for me to stay home BUT I feel like I'm risking my kids health by exposing them to these germs and then treating them with antibiotics!

Re: Have u stopped working 2 keep ur kids healthy?

  • I SAH, but they are still always sick!  I mean, just colds, but still.  They go to the church nursery on Sundays and we go to the mall play area and things like that so they still get sick a lot.  I mistakenly thought that not having them in daycare would help (that's not why I SAH, though) but it really doesn't.

  • um, so that would be YOUR kids and the word is DOSE not does. Ugh. Long day!
  • I'm probably in the minority, but I think they will get sick no matter what.  Yes, my DS is always sick too and I hate it, but if you keep them out, they will get sick when they are 4 and go to school...KWIM?  They have to build their immune system - not sure what they did in the 1800s without antibiotics....
  • My DS has been on antibiotics about 8 times maybe, I lost count.
  • can you look into a home provider?  I think that is where we are headed...lower cost and less kids to pass around germs.  I found a woman that girls on my local board have used..and she is state certified and has a schedule of "learning" stuff that she does with them..ie, tuesdays are music day, wednesday is art, etc.
  • We are in a home daycare and so far (knock on wood), he's only gotten something more serious than a cold - once. Would that be an option? Sory you're dealing with this!

  • That was part of my decision to just stay home after being layed off. Katen spent about 4 weeks out of her first year of life without being sick. Since I've stayed home with her she's been sick... once. Financially we had to cut back on a lot but I feel like it's been worth it. It's not for everyone but it's been good for us.

  • what are they sick with that they get antibiotics for all the time?  If it's ear infections (which is what Griffin had a lot of his first year) then they do not always need antibiotics - and it's best to wait a few days to see if it will go away on it's own - since most ear infections are not from bacteria- but viruses, which the meds won't do anything for... but can create drug resistent bacteria with over use.

I used to teach kindgergarten and can tell you that the SAH kids were all sick as dogs that first year in school.... so it will happen now or happen when they are 5 y/o.

  • I work f/t and my girls are home with the nanny. They get sick--not as often as in day care but they do get sick.  I also have them in activites on Sat/Sun so they are exposed to other kids too.  I think maybe look into in-home daycare b/c the germ exposure may be less--but like many peeps sais, either now or later--they will get sick from the exposure.  Because of our careers and schedules, day care was never an option and we have a live-in nanny whic hhas worked out great.  But we will probably put them in preschool/daycare when they are 3.
  • Hey Loree.. here is my 2 cents... for me a nanny was cheaper than daycare. And there was no freakin way we could get three up and dressed and to daycare before getting to work! LOL Is a nanny an option? Lots of people out there want part time work!  Mine were in daycare for 8 weeks and it was a TOTAL nightmare. They were sick about 6 of the 8 weeks they were there. And that was enough for me.With the nanny.. obviously they will still get sick but since July when the nanny started, they've been sick a grand total of 3 times. Once in August, October, and just this past week at Christmas.

Like alot of people have said, they will get sick either now or when they start school. My philosophy on that is I would MUCH rather have them sick when they are old enough to talk to me and tell me where they hurt and how much!!! LOL

  • I'm with Jen - I'd rather have Jack get sick when he's older and can tell me what's going on - and also when he understands more what's happening.  For now - I am BLESSED to have my mom watch him 4 days a week while I work.  He's been sick twice - once for 3 days - once for over a week - and has never been on antibiotics KNOCK ON WOOOOOODDD!!!!!  I feel very lucky.

PS - Loree - I'm networking, ha ha!  I'm looking for a new part-time job - even 4 days is too much - I'm looking to go down to 2 or 3, unfortunately not an option where I am now.   I'm looking for anything PT in the communications/writing field - so let me know if you hear of anything in our neck of the woods!  Cool
