...when you dont quite need them yet.

MIL gave me 3 really cute maternity sweaters and some jeans for Christmas, however, they were 1-2 sizes too large. Granted, I know the belly area would be too big, but it was a huge tent all over. Went to Target today to exchange them for a different size and my Target didnt have any of the styles, and they have by far the smallest maternity section (I was in and out within one large step). So, I tried to find a few other maternity things, but had no luck. I can still fit into my regular clothes just fine (with a BeBand) so it makes it hard to tell what size I need in maternity. Anyone else trying to stock up on maternity clothes but have no luck? Is it best to wait and shop for when I really need them?

I'm sorry.
Target vanity sizes their maternity clothes by one or two sizes.
I'm normally a S or M, and at target I'm an XS.
I second this. I didn't end up needing very much, personally, a lot of my regular clothes (particularly bulkier winter stuff) fit fine throughout.
Good to know! MIL got me a L in all the shirts and I usually wear a M at Target. They had one cute XS sweater there that actually fit, but was just wierd on me. Target clothes tend to fit me oddly anyways.

Target is hit or miss with clothing.
I only have two items from there. Most are either fug or sewn wrong.
You are going to need maternity clothes any second now. If you're 17 weeks and haven't totally popped yet, then just wait a few weeks and you will. Then you'll start getting bigger and bigger before you know it. I just went to Old Navy and got a BUNCH of cute stuff for cheap. This is my second pregnancy and I "popped" a lot sooner than baby #1. The first time around, I remember asking my best friend when I would start needing maternity clothes and she said SOON (this was right around 14 weeks) and she was right. Before I knew it there was no denying I was pregnant.
