3rd Trimester

Seriously... why is my OB already trying to schedule induction?

My due date was Sunday... ?yes, I'm uncomfortable but not terribly so and I have had an amazingly glowing pregnancy thus far. ?The only concern they have is I tested GBS+ so other than having to get IV in labor, what is the deal? ?

?They mentioned induction to me as far back as week 26 ("If you go one week over, we'll talk induciton...") ?But I'm not even a full week over- I went in for monitoring last Saturday at 39 weeks 6 days and she was already talking it. ?(I was 1 cm and about 40% effaced... ?baby is head down and in position)

Am I missing something here? ?I want to go as natural as possible. ? :(

  • Be firm and tell them no way, Jose! I'm not personally anti-induction, but I believe it's your right to labor how you like.

  • Please don't get me wrong... ?I'm not anti-induction if there is a clear medical need for it (baby in real distress, water broke, etc.) ?but you are right. ?I'm sticking to my guns. ?If there's not a need why mess around? ?My body was made for this...

I'm just wondering if I am missing any other possible reason? ?I can't think of one?

  • I personally wouldn't choose induction unless medically necessary. JMO. Sounds to me like your OB is either on her own schedule or so used to hearing women whine, that maybe she just assumed you would want one. Stick to your guns though, If you don't want one and everything is fine, she shouldn't be pushing one on you until 42 weeks.
  • Inductions are the thing to do these days.  OBs like it, b/c they can schedule it, and it's more convenient.  I'm not saying inductions are a bad thing, always.  Inductions are great for actual valid medical reasons.  And I wouldn't go past 42 weeks.

Anyway, I was induced with my first and I hated the experience so I'm biased.  I'd try to put it off a little longer, given everything is going well.

  • Have you asked hm/her?  I can think of a couple of reasons, from the practical (needing to schedule a minimum amount of time ahead, to ensure space/flexibility in timing, due to the number of moms pre-registered/scheduled already at your chosen hospital) to the medical (information varies on when/whether the placenta becomes less effective/ineffective and the risk to the baby) to any combination of practical and medical.  I was induced for my first baby at 42 weeks, which was standard operating procedure for my practice, but the actual scheduling of induction was done at least a week ahead...I think maybe a week and half, with the "if you need it you're booked and if you don't you don't" approach.
  • Have your discussed their policies on inductions if you go past your DD? I was due Sun too and mine told me at my last appt (12/24) that if I didn't go on my own that I would probably be induced on 1/4 or 1/5 because they don't let patients go past 42 weeks and the only days they are at the hospital for inductions are Mondays and Tuesdays. If they are trying to get you in tomorrow I may be concerned, but if they are scheduling it for next week, that is because you will be getting close to 42 weeks (some say 41) and most OB's won't let you go past that and inductions have to be scheduled ahead of time if possible.

  • Hospitals usually have limited availability for induction patients, so your doctor will want to at least get it on their schedule so that if you don't go on your own, there is a plan in place for you.
  • find out the policy at the hospital.   my dr. does not want her patients to go past 42 weeks so around week 38 we start to discuss the what ifs.    and sometimes they have to schedule an induction a few days out.   next week at my biophysical we will know more (if i go that long).   dr. said if baby not in any distress it is our call if baby is in distress it will be hers.
  • At my appt. yesterday I asked because I don't want to be induced unless necessary.  She said there is no reason to let me go past 42 weeks, in fact, it could be bad for the baby.  If I get to 41 weeks, they will schedule it.  But, I am assuming that it would be for a few days after that time so I would be past 41 weeks.

  • You can decline and as long as you and the baby are healthy they should respect that.  Many mamas don't deliver until 41-42 weeks.  Also, if you don't know the exact day you ovulated your EDD can be off by as much as two weeks...so you might just be right on time and not late afterall.

You can also try to jump start labor on your own by walking, having sex, thumb sucking, nipple stimulation, etc.  I personally plan to try that route before jumping onto the induction band wagon because I also hope to have a natural birth.
