Team Green--ultrasound slipup

Hi Ladies,

I have been team green all the way and absolutely did not want to know the sex until delivery.  Well, during an ultrasound I think I saw little boy parts and now I am really sad.  The nurse knew I didn't know the sex and said she would not tell me and even asked if I knew what I was looking at on the screen and I said no (cause usually I don't) but this really looked like a boy part.  I was crying all night last night and couldn't tell DH why cause I don't want him to know (he was not with me at the ultrasound).

Do you think I could be wrong in what I saw?  I'm not sad cause it could be a boy (I've thought boy all along) but i'm sad that I won't get the surprise in the delivery room with DH.  I know that I don't know for sure what I saw but I just keep thinking about it.

Thanks for letting me vent!

Re: Team Green--ultrasound slipup

  • this could be possible if you are postively sure.. my SIL was able to tell after seeing the US that she was having a boy even though she and my brother agreed not to find out and she asked the tech and the tech confirmed it...

you could be wrong with what you saw.. try to think from that perspective - i know this probably doesnt make you feel better..

  • I absolutely think you could be wrong. Don't stress. Those things are so hard to read. I get one almost every week and still the tech will point out something that I think is something else. Even if you deliver and have a boy, it doesn't mean that you saw it before hand. Don't stress and enjoy the next few weeks. It will fly by before you know it.

  • My ob told us a story yesterday about how this couple was told via ultrasound that they were having a boy and they  ended up having a baby girl.

  • It could be the umbilical cord, too.

  • I wouldn't stress at all. I wanted to find out, and I thought I saw the same thing as you, however it turns out I was wrong and we're having a girl! So like a previous poster said, even if it is a boy, you still may not have saw what you think you saw. G/L and try not to stress :)
  • She could have asked about if you knew what you were seeing if there was nothing there to see too.  I can imagine how upset you must be feeling, but you might be TOTALLY wrong.  In fact, since you aren't trained to read an ultrasound, you only have a 50% chance of being right about what you saw. :)  There are times when even ultrasound techs get it wrong and then someone ends up with a pink wardrobe for a little "Johnny". Try to not let it get you too down.

  • A few things to remember: both boy and girl babies can have really swollen genitalia. I really thought our girl was a boy because her girl parts were so swollen during her ultrasounds. Also, an umbilical cord between the legs can look like a penis sometimes. Try not to stress too much, you really never know until you meet your little one and see for yourself!

This, it's very easy to get them confused.

  • I have had 5 UT, and at the first one I was convinced that I saw a boy part, but I was wrong!  We have had the tech (who has been a different person everytime) check to make sure that she is really a she, and she is.  I swore that I saw a boy part, but it must have been the cord or something, because there is no way 5 different trained people could have missed the boy parts.
  • I also peeked during the ultrasound and thought I saw a little penis... The ultrasound tech told me it was just the umbilical cord Embarrassed

  • I've had three US since finding out the gender at 18 weeks--every time everyone says "whoa definitely a boy!"

I feel ridiculuous because I'm still taking their word for it. I mean I know what a boy looks like and so far I've seen grainy images of amorphous blobs with a few feet and head shots. We even had a 3D and his legs were crossed the whole time so I didn't see anything there.

We review the US pics and the CD of images and it's like "oh look there's his penis....oh wait, no that's a foot!"

There's no reason not to be excited.

You could be right but take joy in seeing your DH's face for the first time or the fact that you still haven't met this little person regardless of if he is a he or a she--so that's got to be exciting right?

  • You definitely could be wrong.  There are so many things going on in an u/s it could have been a cord, or some organs, who knows?!  Don't worry, you'll still be surprised because there's no way for you to know for sure!

  • My DH and I were team green too and we swore we saw boy parts on our Big U/S....we were wrong bc our baby is a girl!  Good luck!
  • No need to freak out over it. I'm also team green. My midwife slipped up at the 35 week u/s and mentioned she saw girl parts. We reminded her right away we didn't want to know. She apologized and let us know she only looked for a minute and couldn't be positive since it was literally a 3 minute u/s.

We still consider ourselves team green. We look at the situation as we have a 60/40 chance of it being a girl. We haven't bought any pink stuff as we know there is still a big possibility that the baby will be a boy.

Also, I could never be upset about the midwife spilling the beans about the sex of the baby. The baby is healthy and finding it out it maybe a girl is nothing but good news.

  • You might not have seen what you thought you did. ?I thought I saw boy parts several times during my ultrasound, but 4 ultrasound techs confirmed we are definitely having a little girl. ?Even in one of the ultrasound pics I got, it really looks like there are boy parts, but it's the umbilical cord or something else. ?It is hard to tell what's going on during the ultrasound sometimes...don't worry, your surprise isn't ruined and it could definitely go either way!

  • If it makes you feel any better, I guessed we were looking at my kid's head the other day but it was actually a weird shot of his stomach and kidneys.

So hopefully what you saw wasn't really what you think you saw.

  • I don't see why you are upset b/c its not like the technician slipped up and said anything.  There are two ways to completely avoid this: one, never look at the ultrasound and two, if she was going into the groin area maybe giving you a heads up so you can look away.  The way my son has been flipping around, there was little warning before he (repeatedly) showed us his manhood at several appointments.

I understand disappointment, but crying?  There are a lot more things to cry about during pregnancy.

  • We know for a fact that we're having a boy. During our 20w US they got a crystal clear shot as if he was sitting on a glass table and we were looking up at him.

Then today I had an US and there was no way in the world I could tell she was looking at his little boy parts.

I'm gonna have to agree with the pp, you could be completely wrong. Then again it is a 50% chance of being right.

  • imageGreyfaery:

This. 100x. I thought we were having a boy. The u/s tech said, "Nope that's umbilical cord. It's a girl."

  • YOu don't know for sure what you were looking at.  Don't go running out and buying all blue stuff yet.
  • DH and I did want to find out but wanted to find out with famiily so we had the u/s tech write it down.  During the u/s however both DH and I were looking at the screen until the tech said to look away.  DH and I BOTH thought we saw boy parts.  When my FIL opened the envelope and read it was a girl DH and I were both shocked.

I still can't tell how they know she's a girl.  You definitely could be wrong.

  • The Dr at my 20 week U/S at the end said something to the effect of "she looks very healthy" or "she looks like a healthy baby".  At first I was sad b/c I thought the surprise was ruined but neither DH or I reacted or questioned the Dr about what he said b/c we didn't want to see his reaction or watch him try to back peddle, if it was in fact a slip up.

And while at first I was convinced he totally blew it, there is still a chance that he just said "she" to avoid saying "it"....we'll never know.

And truthfully, I just feel like its a boy....you will still be surprised b/c you don't know, with 100% certainty, if what you saw was a penis or not.  You won't know until the day the LO comes into this world.  So try not to get too upset at this point...and when LO does arrive, what you saw on that U/S will be the LAST thing on your mind.

My DH keeps worrying this is going to happen.. he asked me if he can ask the doctor for his boy back if it does happen.  Haha.

  • It could have been the umbilical cord between the legs. Unless you really looked and they got a great shot there is no way to know for sure! And because you already were thinking it was a boy that might influence what you think you saw too.

  • You could be wrong I suppose. But in my experience boy parts are pretty obvious.

In the future, just don't look at the screen.
