yoga do-ers...a prenatal yoga poll

I looked at a prenatal yoga dvd yesterday but couldn't bring myself to drop the $20.  I've been very very bad about exercise and have always liked yoga, have a few regular yoga dvds already...here's the poll:

Is prenatal yoga very different? Is it worth buying a new dvd for? (If it is, I will, no questions asked.  I'm desperate to start feeling healthy again and my back is absolutely killing me.)

Re: yoga do-ers...a prenatal yoga poll

  • I do yoga as a class not a dvd and my instructor has me augment poses.  You are not suppose to do upside down poses such as shoulder stand until after 1st trimester.  There are other things like twists that need to be modified.  I can't comment on DVDs but I would just be careful.

  • I'm not a regular yoga doer (I really should be a lot better about it...), so don't believe me too much, but I have DVDs for both types.

I think they are different, and specially now in 3rd tri I really need those modifications and embrace them. Also, the poses used are different. I really can't imagine doing some poses with this belly!

  • I sometimes do the Yoga Mama video through Netflix- it's a watch instantly one. I don't know if I could bring myself to pay $20 for a DVD either. I also use the poses given in the book Active Birth- not as easy as working with a DVD but it gives you the poses and what they help stretch and how it prepares you for the birth.

I have never done regular yoga so I couldn't tell you the difference.

  • oh, thanks! Now I'm excited, we have netflix! I didn't even think of that!
  • Please use a PN specific yoga DVD or netflix pre-natal option unless you've been to a PN yoga class.

I'm a little overzealous when it comes to my yoga practice and had been doing some poses that I know now are a no-no (cobra, modified cobra, cat - arch, twists.) ruh roh 'reorge......

Do balance poses against a wall or with a chair nearby.

    Avoid inversions or extensive twists.

Avoid moderate to deep back bends or arched poses.

  • I just picked up a few prenatal yoga dvd's from my library-it's free so I won't feel too bad if I don't do them regularly.

  • My prenatal class was much different than all the other yoga classes I've taken. Not only will you do poses  differently so that they are safer for you and the baby, you will learn completely new poses to help you prepare for childbirth. If Netflix doesn't work, maybe try the library.
