2nd Trimester

Does everyone agree on "Baby Bargains"?

I'm stopping at the book store on my lunch break and was going to pick up a copy if they have it.

Do you think this book is helpful when planning a registry? Any other book suggestions for registry planning?

DH and I are 2st time parents who are very out of touch with the whole process of pg, birth, planning, etc. We're going to do our registry in a couple of weeks when my mom is visiting from out of town, so we'd like to have a list 'ready' when we go into BRU, so the process is (hopefully) shorter.

Any other suggestions (in addition to books) is appreciated Smile

  • I'd be clueless without it. That said, I didn't really look for any other books because of what people had said on here. I guess the alternative is Consuemr Reports book that is for baby stuff? I'll also ask a couple mom friends/family to review my registry when it's done.

  • DH got me a copy for X-mas and I absolutely love it.  The writers are not paid from any companies, so its not rigged at all. I think its going to be the MOST helpful to take with us when we register because it reviews all items, all brands and gives a LOT of info about them.  They don't just pick the most expensive item either and say thats the best one.  I have found it extremely helpful so far.
  • Its like the bible of baby gear.  I consulted it for everything.  That and consumer reviews.  Without them I would have been absolutely clueless

Are the reviews 'we loved/hated it' reviews by consumers or are they 'safety' reviews by the authors?
DH and I signed up for a year of Consumer Reports on line for help, too Smile

  • I did not find this book helpful at all with DS. I would not buy it again with this ones, even though I got rid of almost all of DS's stuff. I found the author to be very frugal and he bashed some of the things I liked because they were too expensive and for no other reason. I do not think I took a single recommendation from this book except maybe the car seat but that info is east to find elsewhere.
  • We used it to develop our registry. Then we had some mommy friends review it and make suggestions on things to add or take off. HTH

It is called baby bargains...as in deals.  What did you think they were going to do?

That said, I bought it a few weeks ago.  So far it has been great helping me get an idea as to what I even need.  Newborn shopping is overwhelming, and I am glad to know I don't need 90 bazillion onesies.

  • I really liked it when planning for DS.  I had absolutely no clue about baby stuff and even if you don't go with the author's recs, it breaks everything down by category and need (what you need vs what you don't).  It really helped get me focused & pick out what we thought would work best for us.
  • I found this book amazingly helpful - I would have had a really hard time without it!  And yes, it is called Baby Bargains, so they're not going to recommend the most expensive things out there - they're going to recommend the most useful for the best price.  They usually do have a final recommendations list at the end of each chapter which gives the "cheap," mid-range, and expensive recommendations.

I used this, then read customer reviews on the products, and then decided.  We registered for most of the big stuff online where we could really read about it, then just looked at it in the store to make sure we liked it.  This made registering MUCH easier than doing it all in the store.  We also have consumer reports online, and honestly I didn't find this very helpful at all.  They don't have everything rated (actually a very small number of thing are rated), and some of the reviews are out of date and they have changed the products.

  • It actually stressed me out. There are things that they rated a B or C because of poor customer service. As long as the item works and is safe I don't care about the customer service.  I like Consumer Reports on baby stuff much more.

  • I used that and Consumer Reports to make a decision on everything. I found that there were a lot of things that CR hadn't reviewed, so it was nice to have Baby Bargains to review as well.

  • This book is VERY overwhelming. It makes the whole process for me more stressful....like I am now thinking WAAAAAY too hard about which products to get. I tend to be an impuslive shopper though. It is good but information overload...I just need someone to tell me what to get. I am having a hard time deciding what to get,..haven't even started my registry yet. Plan to this weekend but as I look at the book and browse internet sites I get a little stressed.
  • I think it's a great book and I wouldn't go without! Yes, it can be overwhelming if you try to take it all in in one sitting (I did that, won't make that mistake again). But now I find that it's a great tool for focusing on one category at a time. We're using it to go through cribs and I think it's been a valuable tool to steer you towards the best (not necesarrily the cheapest) options. And as with any reviews, you do have to take them with a grain of salt. Are there things in there they say you don't need that I still plan on getting? Absolutely! Just like talking to 10 moms, you'll get a bunch of different opinions and you have to weigh them and decide what works best for you. If nothing else it's a great resource to get your organized and start getting you in the mindset of all things baby, plus give you an explanation in laymans terms so you can figure out what the heck the difference is between an infant and convertible carseat is!
