Moms of PT'ed boys

If you used a potty seat, when did you switch to the "big potty"?

T is fully PT'ed, but on the potty seat. I know he uses the "big potty" at daycare, that's all they have.

When did you switch over, and how? Did you use a seat on the toilet? When did you have him stand up to pee?

  • DS never really used the little potty, unless he's in an all about me mood, then he'll go to the bathroom and lock the door and say I do I do. Most of the time though, one of us go to the bathroom with him and lift him onto the big potty, we had a step stool, but he get's tangled up unless he strips from the waist down, We never used a potty ring on the big toilet though.  As far as standing up, he will from time to time, mainly when we are out and about and he has to use the public restroom, but most of the time at home, he sits because usually he poops when he pees.

Sorry really didn't answer your question much.  Have you tried asking him if he wants to use the big potty?? Has he stood at all to pee yet?? DS always pees outside in the summer.

  • We used a potty chair at home and a regular toliet at daycare.  He still sits on the big potty at home.  He stands at school since they are low to the ground.  One day we just put away the potty chair and they started to use the regular one w/o any problems.

  • at school and out and about, we have to lift him so his tush is resting on the back of the seat -- this is how he goes. at home we have a potty seat that goes on the toilet. not sure when that will change.

my friend's kid is able to balance himself while sitting.

not standing to pee yet! he's done it a few times, aiming at a cheerio.

  • As soon as he was consistently using the potty, we got rid of the chair, as that thing was gross to clean out.  For a few months, he used the seat on the regular toilet, but eventually (around the time he turned 3) he didn't want to use that anymore either.

  • We never used a potty seat (my kids are big and DS potty trained at 3.25) and I hated the seat on the toilet because I would have to move it all the time since we only have 1 toilet downstairs.

When we started taking him to preschool a few weeks later we found out they put the kids on the toilet backwards until they can handle balancing themselves and not making a mess.  Voila.  Kind of annoying at first to take off his pants all the way, but still the least gross of the options.  Once he was comfortable on the big potty with no seat and consistently aimed down (maybe a week or 2 later), we turned him around.  Sooo much easier.

We haven't done the standing up thing yet.  My son has autism and I'm not confident that he could distinguish between needing to go poop vs. pee and then communicate that to me.  One step at a time.
