2nd Trimester

To take birthing lessons or not?

This is my second but with my first I never took the birthing class.  I was told that the baby would be c-section birth early on but then conditions changed and they decided to go vaginally.  Byt that time there was no time to get into a class.  I read a few things saw a video but still the nurse got pissy at me because I was breathing wrong during labor.

So this time around I am wondering if the classes would help at all.  I barely remember much about last time as it is.

Why did you sign up for your class if you are doing them

Re: To take birthing lessons or not?

  • We did the hospital class with our first, and are doing it again with our second.  The biggest thing for me is that they refresh on both relaxation techniques and medical pain relief options, as well as on what could happen if something goes wrong.  In the heat of the moment, if they NEED to do something, they may not have time to explain it thoroughly, and I want to have knowledge ahead of time so I know what's going on if they do.

  • We are wanting to do a med free birth so we will probably take a class simply for the relaxation and getting through the pain techniques. Since you have been through Labor once I would say if you feel it was a decent experience then just skip them. BUT if you feel not knowing the breathing techniques and what to expect truly effected your experince (and would this time aswell) go for the class!

  • I am going to take some, esp with DH. I just think knowledge is power and I know there are various stages to labor and its good to know what to expect during each, and more importantly how to get through each stage effectively.

  • I didn't with my first, and probably wont' with this one. My thought is the baby is coming out one way or the other, classes or not.

This may have changed my mind! I was not planning on taking any classes, because as stated by a PP I figured the baby was coming out one way or another regardless of classes (and I am sure whatever breathing I learn will be out the window when real labor hits lol) BUT I hadn't thought about the fact that if an important intervention needed to take place there may not be the time to thoroughly explain it to me. Thank you for this comment as it gave me a different perspective on the hospital classes and what can be gained from them.

Woo-hoo, l'm useful Smile.  Luckily we didn't end up needing intervention during labor, but I think I would have fainted if the first time somebody hauled out forceps or a vacuum was when I was trying to give birth to my baby!

  • I'm a Neonatal nurse so I know all the bad stuff....and I go to deliveries all the time.  I wasn't planning on taking a class, but I think we are going to so DH doesn't pass out in the DR!!

THIS...lol. We never took one with DD because we thought that all the techniques we would have learned would be out the window when the real thing comes. We just did what the nurses told us to do, and that worked great .

  • We're going to take one through the hospital. We opted for two Saturdays rather than four weeknights, because it's fewer meetings (also the weeknight courses don't end until 9, which gets us home late).

Basically, I think we're taking the class because...well, I'm not sure why. Mr. Nonymous hasn't read any of the books, so I figure this will be useful info for both of us.
