Eco-Friendly Family

Do you get political about your EFness?

Do you write your senator/local politicians, etc?  Do you actively sign petitions and support local movements to improve the environmental aspects of your region?

I'm not the best about any of this, to be honest.  Just got me wondering, with the post about school meat, I think it's disgusting, and will probably hope to send DS to school w/ a homemade meal, however, I don't know that I will be setting aside time to write our school board about it, either.

  • I only write to senators, governors, etc. when there is an easy link and an online petition. Lame, I know, but I feel like it's a little somethin'. We're members of our local Sierra Club but haven't attended any meetings yet since they mainly take place two hours from us. We're huge supporters of the national parks, though, and I'd like to incorporate conservation-effort volunteerism into Sprout's rearing.

  • In the past I have.  Very much so in fact.  But since having kids I've backed off a bit...I still vote and am very vocal.  I just no longer spend all my time knocking on doors, lobbying and working in the political arena.

  • I have signed and supported many local eco-friendly petitions in my area, even when I lived in Boston, MA I did. Vermont is a really eco-friendly place to live.. well some areas. There are a lot of people here who advocate for eco-friendly "things". I like that many, many places and people support locally grown materials and farms. I buy a lot of my stuff locally and so do a lot of my family members and friends. Burlington is a big eco place, especially the University of Vermont. I have never written to any politicians though as I sadly don't keep myself up to date on a lot of issues.

I know there are some schools in Vermont who's lunch program has become a lot healthier and the farm-to-schools program has become bigger in the last couple years. However, there are way more schools out there that need to improve their lunch programs. It's hard for them to do because if the school lunches don't meet certian requirements (like number of calories and fat) then the school looses its funding from the government. Right now the government is only funding for those nasty meats, gross veggies (the gray peas), syrupy fruits, etc. You would think that the government would advocate for healthier options, but it comes down to money and making money.

  • I don't write my senator/local politicians regularly, and if I do it's not a form letter.  The last time I contacted an official it was my state senator on changing animal facility inspection laws (it passed!).

I never sign petitions.  I want to know what I'm signing first, and they rarely have enough information for me to make an educated decision on the petition.

I do vote for politicians that align with my general idea of what is right, and on their stances on issues.

  • Yep.  And A LOT of our charitable giving is to EF causes.

  • I work for a Senator and am not allowed to write to my other reps because my opinion as a representative of my boss could be construed as my boss' opinion.  It's something you give up, but on the upside I can tell him exactly what I think in person when he's in the office instead of my message getting passed to a legislative aide...so I guess it's a fair trade.  My nickname in the office is "crunchy con" after the book by Rod Dreher so I guess people know how I feel.  Big Smile
