2nd Trimester

Tilted uterus?

I had an ultrasound today, and heard for the first time that my uterus is tilted, but was told "that's normal for some people." The sonographer was having a hard time getting a good look at the baby, but its heart was beating very strong, it was measuring correctly, and it all looked healthy (she had me leave and drink a ton of water, which helped quite a bit with the visuals).

I just did a little research and it seems like complications during pregnancy from a tilted uterus are very rare. And apparently the uterus goes from position to position all the time during pregnancy.

Just curious if anyone else has been told they have a tilted uterus and is problem-free through the second trimester?

I kind of scared myself reading about a condition called "incarcerated uterus" where a tilted uterus becomes trapped in the abdominal cavity and can cause late miscarriage. Eek!  Seems that just when you think you are mostly in the clear, there is always something lurking to freak you out :)

Re: Tilted uterus?

  • Mine was tilted at first.  Obviously as he grew, it shifted out.  No worries!

  • I have a tilted uterus. My OB is not concerned at all, so I'm not worried about it. I'm not through 2nd Tri yet, but I'm getting closer!
  • They said mine was tilted, too.  Just made it harder to HEAR (not see) the heartbeat in the beginning.  I am sure it's fine.
  • I have a tilted uterus, and through all my appts so far my doctors don't seem worried, they never even brought it up.  (I did have a pelvic / pap / and the works so I know they know about it)  So I'm not going to worry about it either!
  • I was told 3 years ago that I have a tilted uterus when I had surgery for endometriosis.  However, my OB told me that pregnancy usually corrects this and that there are rarely complications.  I didn't have much trouble seeing the baby in an ultrasound, but my bladder was already pretty full.  My doctor did not seem concerned, so I'm trying not to be!
  • I'm not sure if mine was still tilted, but I was told at my 10w appointment with DD that my uterus was severely tilted.

No complications at all.  She was born at 39w5d (induction) and was a healthy 9lb1oz.

  • I have a tilted uterus.... I was told that with my first child and with this pregnancy as well. I had some complications last time and had to have a c-section, but I dont think it had anything to do with that. I was told that It causes more painful periods, wich makes since to me because mine were terrible! Good luck and dont worry too much, I think its a fairly common thing. My mom has a tilted uterus too and she had two babies naturally with no problems, just throwing that out there.
  • Mine is tilted. My OB said it was no big deal at all! Smile

  • Mine is tilted too.  Nothing to worry about.
  • Mine is tilted too - never been an issue for me. I had 2 smooth?deliveries.?
  • Oh, thank you...Seems like everyone is rocking a tilted uterus. hehe.

Good to know things have gone smoothly for everyone!

  • Another tilted uterus here--what will happen is that at some point in the pregnancy, the size of the baby will "tip" your uterus into a "normal" position.  It will then revert right back to tilted after delivery.

The only problem, as PP said, is difficulty hearing the heartbeat early on. :)

  • I have a retroverted uterus meaning it tilts back and it's also kind of lopsided I guess. I haven't had any complications and already have one healthy DD.
