a question for the "fluffy" girls re hearing the heartbeat

i have quite a bit of non-baby related padding on my tummy. the last time i was at the ob-gyn, i was 9 weeks and he tried to listen to the baby's heartbeat via doppler. it was no surprise to anyone that that ended in a big fat fail. however, my next appointment is coming up, and i think i will be much more disapointed if i still can't hear anything at 14 weeks.

when did you first hear the baby's heartbeat at the dr's office? what about using a home doppler (if you used one)?

thanks in advance!

Re: a question for the "fluffy" girls re hearing the heartbeat

  • 9 weeks is kind of early to hear the heartbeat...my OB didn't even try until 11 weeks. But they've never had a problem (and I'm like you - non-baby weight on my stomach)
  • Loading the player...
  • I have a lot of non baby weight on my tummy too, and they heard it just fine at my 12 week appt. GL!
  • Non-baby weight here too on my tummy. Heard heartbeat no problem at my 12 week. Bought my own doppler around 14-15 and had no problems.
  • My OB couldn't find the HB with DD or LO until 13 weeks I believe. If they can't hear the HB at 14 weeks more than likely they would do a quick U/S. Just to be sure they hear heart tones etc. It's still a little early, no worries :)
  • During my appointment Monday was the first time my OB used the doppler and the HB picked up fine...

  • I also having extra on my tummy, but my ob was able to find the heartbeat at 13 weeks. She did use a portable u/s machine to find the baby, once she had been trying for a while, but she assured me that it can take a long time, no matter your size. At my appointment yesterday, she found the hb in 2 seconds.

I am surprised that your ob tried at 9 weeks, because that is early for everyone, no matter how much fluff you have. Just do a google search for hearing the baby's hb for the first time. I hope your ob didn't make you feel bad about your size, or you should find one that is more supportive.

yeah, he said that. technically i was 9 weeks and 4 days, so he was like "eh, we'll give it a try" but it really wasn't a surprise that it was too early. i moved my appointment to today, so hopefully 4 weeks will do the trick!

Oh, good!  I am glad that he made that clear.  Good luck!

  • I heard the hb for the first time yesterday, actually (17w1d).   She tried last visit - 3 weeks ago - but it was a fail.

She looked first with her u/s machine to see where the baby was and then tried to listen with the doppler where she saw the heart on the u/s.  Three weeks ago the baby was facing backwards making hearing the HB even harder to hear.  Yesterday the baby was facing forward and was three weeks older, bigger and we heard it right away.

  • We heard ours twice in one week at 13 weeks.

  • Im not skinny by any means, I definitely had some leftover flab from DS on my belly. My OB couldnt find it & 9 weeks, but I found it the next day at home with my rented doppler. Ive been able to find it everytime ever since.

If they cant find it at 14w, rent a doppler so you can practice at home.

    GL!

  • I have a very fluffly abdomen and they could always hear the heartbeats. I think its different for everyone.

  • Since I never lost the extra 30 pounds of "baby weight" (more like cake weight) from being pregnant with DD my tummy is fairly fluffy. My OB doesn't even try until the 12 week appointment, and even then she had a hard time because she kept picking up my h/b on the doppler instead. She eventually did find it at 12 weeks but just before she did, she said that if she wasn't able to she was going to do an ultrasound to make sure everything was going OK. At my 16 week appointment they found it right away. Good luck, 9 weeks is early.
  • I'm not fluffy at all (pre preg 5'9" around 130lbs) and our OB couldn't find our baby's hb at almost 13 weeks.  My OB won't even try to listen until 11.  If they can't hear it at 14 weeks they might schedule you for an ultrasound to make sure everything's OK.  That's what they did with me and LO was just being difficult, hiding and bouncing around.
  • I was 15 weeks the last time they tried to use the doppler on me, and they couldn't find it. Luckily they rushed me right into an ultrasound to check for the heartbeat. They scared us for the few minutes between with how urgent they wanted to check us, but everything was ok!
  • I also have "fluff" on my belly.  I heard the HB loud and clear at 11w2d.  I think 9 weeks is just too early.  I am sure you will hear it at the next appt Fluff or no Fluff.  Big Smile
