Is this fabric hideous?

We have a bench in our house with this fabric on it. I found more of it in the basement and was planning on listing it for free on Craigslist.

DH really really hates the bench and wants me to re-upholster it, but it is kinda growing on me. I feel like I am growing blind to its ugliness. LOL

I need some outside opinions. Keep the bench as is or re-upholster it?

 Thanks!

that's how I felt at first. like "eh, looks kinda old and outdated, but whatev". not sure now though.

  • If you have other accessories in the room with different fabric and colors then it'd probably go great.  I don't love it, but it's workable.
  • It has the potential to be really great or really hideous - this fabric that is.

?What else are you planning on pairing it with in the space?

?I just spent the day redesigning my girlfriend's condo. We hit up several stores and I just fluffed it with pillows and lamps and hung her artwork in different spaces but what a change.?

  • Thanks everyone. I dont have a pic right now. I can go take one though. Give me a minute...
  • I don?t really love or hate it ? I guess its ok .

  • Ok, I just took this. Kinda hard to see. We haven't decorated the shelves or added pillows. Just moved in around Thanksgiving, so it is chaos in our house. Image and video hosting by TinyPic
  • I like it more after seeing it in the pic.

I just found out the other day about your show. now I am looking for you every time I watch HGTV! I need some major help with this house. It is 80 years old and needs a lot of lovin.

  • After seeing the pic, no.  The bench works as a centerpiece for me...I don't like the fabric enough for that.

Yeah, you are probably right. It takes up the whole left wall in our living room.  Kind of an eyesore.

Awww... My house was built in 1856 so I'm all in the know on old houses.

Go with a ticking fabric for the bench seat that works with the fabric that you've shown here. Do the piping on the bench in the solid colour of the stripe to contrast. Use this fabric as throw pillows on the bench with down feather fills - no polyester fill crap. Mix in a solid pillow and the same stripe from the bench seat but have the stripe cut into triangles and then piece it together so that the stripes make a flag pattern. I am probably not explaining myself great there.

If you track me down on FB I can give you some links to what I speak of pillow wise from a restaurant I designed this summer or email you pics. I think they are on my fb though. ?I had a photo shoot there days before I had Luke this summer but I'm pretty sure I uploaded them to fb.?

  • oh and buzz me Thursday onward if you want help with fabric selections. I'm taking the rest of the week off from my actual day job. Which is um well this. HA!
  • Care, it sounds like you should listen to everyone else and not me LOL

haha whatever!! its growing on me too. its really not that bad. thanks everyone :)

dh says he wins --new fabric.

  • I didn't mind it so much before I saw it on the bench. Now I vote for new fabric!

I like classic/traditional prints on more contemporary furniture and vice versa. But that's my opinion...

  • I just sent you a PM.  I am 90% sure that my mom's bedroom set is in that same fabric.  If you choose to get rid of it, I think she would want it.  PM me and let me know.

For design ideas, she has a green and white striped throw pillow that goes with it--very narrow stripes.  I'm not sure what else.  But I think she used stripes to go with it and she painted her room in one of the deep rose color--it had a southwest feel to the color, not a sickly rose color.  She just moved and repainted her bedroom a yellow that coordiates with the fabric.
