Does anyone's LO have a sacral dimple? DS has one but the doctor never ever mentioned it to us. I only discovered it because I googled and found out the name. Basically, DS has a "dimple" above his butt crack. It kind of looks like a 2nd butt hole. I've always noticed it but didn't think anything of it until I noticed the other day that it seemed deeper than before. It's kind of hard to see the bottom of it.
I'm only worried in that it can be a sign of spina bifida and my doctor has never once mentioned it to even indicate that they noticed it. I'll call the pedi to ask more about it but was wondering if anyone one here has a LO with the same thing and what was done.
Re: Sacral dimple?
Oh really, I never knew it could be a sign of anything either and the dr never mentioned it. My mom mentioned it to me when she was first born and just told me I would have to take care to clean the poop good out of there bc it kinda gets smushed into the dimple.
ETA - when she was first born I used to joke it was an indentation from being jammed up in my ribs, haha.
That's also another question of mine. I don't know how to clean it out. I don't want to go too far in there if it's sensitive. You know? But there was some poo in there today and I had a hard time getting it out.
I'm sure my mommy senses are on high alert just because I don't think the pedi ever saw it. His exams were all with diaper on and just a quick check, which mostly only included checking his penis. I would have thought the doctor would have mentioned it just to say "here's what it is and it's not a problem." You know?
the concern is when the dimple is very deep, indicating the spine did not fuse properly.
if you can see the bottom of the dimple without having to look very hard, you probably have nothing to worry about. sometimes it is accompanied by hair around the area, also normal.
it can be a genetic thing. i have one, my sister had one, and DD has one.
Thank you for sharing. Neither DH nor I have one and I don't know that any of my relatives do so I have no experience with it. That does make me feel better. I appreciate you blasting such a personal thing on a public forum.
Jumping in from 0-3! My DD has one as well. Her pedi discovered it at her 1st appt. It is on the shallow side, but her pedi wanted to have it checked out just to be on the safe side. She said it is pretty common, but can sometimes indicate a problem with the spinal cord like you mentioned. She sent DD for an ultrasound to look at her spinal cord. Luckily it was nothing, and the dimple is slowly going away.
Definitely call your pedi and ask them to put in an order for an u/s. It is most likely nothing, but it will put your mind at ease!
DD has one. Pedi never mentioned it either, I only learned about the name of it on here. I called the pedi about a month ago after learning about it and they said they will take a closer look at it at her 4 month appt, which is Monday.
She is moving just fine and it is shallow so I wasn't too concerned since pedi didn't seem concerned. I just keep it clean.
I'm a pediatric dermatology PA and commonly see these. When I do see them, i always order an ultrasoud to check for spina bifida and / or dysraphism. It might be overkill, but in my opinino, an ultrasound is easy, cheap, and non-invasive - and will give you piece of mind!
