Next Christmas...

We are staying home all day!  We went three different places on Christmas Day, which was ridiculous.  By the time we got to FIL's house in the evening Jillian became an upset tantrum-throwing mess because she couldn't touch any of their knick knacks.  I told DH that next year we are staying home and everybody can just come see us.

I also told my dad that we need to get together with them on the weekend before or after Christmas rather than 9am Christmas morning.  He and my stepmom get upset when everybody can't make it (his 3 kids, her 3 kids plus spouses and grandkids).  When we discussed it Christmas morning she sounded miffed and said that she guessed they understood since they were the last family formed (her and my dad married 6 years ago).  But that has nothing to do with it!  You can't expect grown kids scattered throughout the state with a multitude of family obligations to all be able to get together Christmas day.   The logistics just don't work!

So from now on I'm being selfish, staying home and building traditions with my own little family.

  • Yes! This is the second year we have had everyone come to our house, and it has been sooo nice! I highly recommend it :)

  • DH and I decided this too. We aren't going to my Sisters again as my BIL was complaining about Carter crying and he also did on Thanksgiving. It's also too much for Carter and DH and I want things of our own to share with him as he grows up. We've done things for everyone else for so long it's time for us to just be.

Oh and we are starting this by not going to my Sister's for New Years so I'm already on the naughty list for Santa next year cause I'm the bad child/sister/aunt.

  • We are planning on doing the same next year. My grandparents, aunts..etc always came to us growing up, so I can't see why it can't happen now.

  • Yes  Good for you, especially since you'll have two little ones next year.  Going so many places really takes the fun out of it.

Upset over a baby (especially one so small) crying???  That is just crazy.  A holiday is hard no matter how little you are.

  • I agree -- hosting or spreading it out are way better than spending the whole day driving-helloing-goodbyeing.  Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, day after Christmas, New Year's Day, weekend before/after Christmas... these are all good candidates.

  • This!

I had a similar Christmas rant a few days ago. So, we made up a note card with our dream 2010 Christmas, and you know what...we're doing it. There are 363 perfectly good days besides Christmas and Christmas Eve....why make us stress out like that.
