2nd Trimester

Wishing I was feeling some movement!

First time mom ---

I'm 17 weeks pregnant and reading all of these ladies blogs who have already felt their baby move - especially flutters! I haven't had a single one (that I know of).

What will a flutter feel like??? I know the baby is moving because when I visit my OB and she listens to the heart beat, she can hear the baby moving and flipping around! She gets so excited but I want to be exicted too!!!!!

Re: Wishing I was feeling some movement!

  • Do you have an anterior placenta? If you do, it may take you longer to be able to feel movement. At least that's what my DR told me.

  • I didn't really feel movement (or recognize it) until almost 18 weeks. The best way someone explained it to me is it feels like popcorn popping or even a muscle pull. I felt it mainly lower in my uterus and very infrequently.

Now it feels like he's doing flips in my stomach and pushing off of anything he can like a swimmer pushes off of a wall.

  • Me too! I'm 18 weeks and still havent felt anything.  My doctor said some first time moms wont feel anything until 22-24 weeks.

  • I felt her first at 15w3d. To me it felt like bubbles popping in my belly. But, the movements didn't become more constant until about 20 to 22w.

  • For me, it was unmistakable at 19 weeks.  Before then I couldn't tell if it was movement or gas.  You will just know when it's your baby.
  • Don't worry-- I didn't feel my first movement until 17w5days and then it was a few random (what I now know were) kicks. I'm feeling them more regularly now and DH even felt a big kick on Sunday night.

If you are sitting after you eat you may feel them- mine tend to be the strongest then.

  • I felt first movement at the end of week 17 but my doctor said that it could take as long as 22 weeks depending on where the placenta was. I know it's hard but be patient and it will happen. For me the term flutters or popcorn didn't make any sense, it felt just like a muscle twitch in my lower abdomen. I thought it may be baby the first time it happened but was positive when it kept happening for days on top of that. Didn't get strong enough for DH to feel until 20 weeks though.
  • i'm a first timer too and while i *think* i've felt some flutters it's so hard to really know, ya know?  i definitely haven't felt any of the big unmistakeable movements yet - but as pp mentioned - i do have an anterior placenta which they said is likely why as all u/s have shown baby to be very active.  it truely is hard to be patient though!  i want to feel her!!!

  • It may take a while to feel.  I'm 20 wks tomorrow and still have not felt baby move.  We went to the big u/s yesterday and could see LO moving all over the place.  The tech kept commenting on how wiggly he was.  When I mentioned that I don't feel a thing, she showed me that I have an anterior placenta that is sitting between my belly and LO preventing me from feeling his movements yet.  She said not to worry, I'll be feeling him in a couple of weeks once his movements get stronger.
  • Sometimes it just takes time. Plus it depends on where your placenta is. Do you know where yours is? If you have an anterior placenta you may not feel the small stuff. I have an anterior placenta myself and never felt any of the flutters that so many people talk about. I went from feeling nothing to feeling full on kicks at 21 weeks, just like that.

They say the average time to feel the baby is around 20 weeks, regardless of placenta, so you may just be a few weeks away from feeling it. It's hard to be patient I know, but hang in there!

  • I started feeling it at 17 weeks.  It only happens a few times a day and feels like a little thump!  I mostly notice it when I am laying down in the bed at night after eating.  I'm sure it will happen for you soon!
