Confused re: listeria risks

I'll probably end up emailing my Dr. about this, but I thought I'd ask you ladies first.

So, I know there is a listeria risk in eating most lunch meats cold. Is the risk higher because most pre-packaged lunch meats are formed from multiple animals? (ie; the meat in a slice of ham comes from many different pigs.) Is the fancy-shmancy deli meat cut fresh from a whole, un-formed piece of meat safer? (ie; whole turkey breast)

Also, what's this I hear about avoiding soft cheeses b/c of listeria? Is there something inherently listeria-loving about the texture? Or is it just a question of pasturization?

Re: Confused re: listeria risks

  • You can eat soft cheeses that are pasteurized. I cleared that with my doc.

I asked her about the roast beef/turkey vs. salami idea and she said the risk came from the meats sitting out so that didn't necessarily eliminate the risk.

  • It doesn't have anything to do with the animals--it's the storage temperature of meats. Most people would not get listeria, but when PG you are slightly immune compromised, hence your increased risk.

Soft cheeses are generally safe. It's clear if they're not pasteurized (and is only likely if they're from a local farmstand or imported).

For the most part food-related illnesses aren't from the animals themselves, its from being handled/cooked/processed improperly.

Gotcha. That clears things up a bit. Thanks!

  • The listeria risk is minimal.  I personally, do not reheat my meat to steaming.  Most cheeses in the U.S. are pasterized, so the no soft cheeses rule doesn't really apply to us.  You can check the label if you are not sure.

  • You can also pick Listeria up from Soft Serve Ice Cream (I.E - Dairy Queen Blizzards are a no no)  Due to the fact that way they "swirl" the ice cream, that thing can be covered in bacteria.

oh, I am so glad I read this! Soft serve is my favorite and while I don't really eat ice cream in the winter, I sure do in the summer! Thanks for the tip!!

  • You have a better chance of getting hit by lightning than getting listeria.

  • I've read that deli meat {from the actual deli counter} has a higher risk of contamination that prepacked meat, mostly because it just sits in the counter, exposed to air, varying temperatures & whatnot.

A friend of mine suggested buying lunch meat in the smallest package possible, microwaving it until it steams before eating it, and discarding any meat that is left opened but uneaten for longer than 48 hours.

Such a bummer about soft cheeses, right? I could live off brie, ricotta, and feta cheese.

You still can. Most ricotta you eat will be cooked well enough to eliminate any bacteria (assuming you're out and can't totally verify it's pasteurized) and you can just check the packaging on the others to ensure they are pasteurized.

My doc said this also.  She said since it is sliced where everything else is sliced the risk is so much higher.  She told me that I did not even have to heat the prepackaged meats

  • Umm, i think you need to read the postby Geekchic about a condition we should all be aware of.  =) Listeria effects less than 1000 weman a year I had a sandwhich an hour ago.  Everything in moderation.
