Dermatologist: if you've Been to one/are one

I am going for my first appointment tomorrow.  I have been breaking out since going off the pill about 6 months ago.  nothing over the counter works and I have super sensitive skin, so I get a rash from over the counter remedies.

I always wear makeup when I go out of the house, but should I keep makeup off for the appointment?  I want her to really see what my skin issues are, but of course hate going out with out makeup on.

  • What if you wear it and then wash there?  I was seen by a tech/nurse first and then the doc came in.  You could ask then and be ready to wash if needed?

  • yeah, but if you have to wash it off anyways, why even put it on.

I think you should not wear any....just put lipgloss and or a touch of mascara or something.

  • Where is your rash and what does it look like?
  • i've never been to a dermatologist but i'm guessing that they are used to having clients come in from work and their normal daily routines which could equal make up, so you removing the make up there could work.  me?  if i were just going right to the appt. i'd go make up free.  but that is now, years ago probably not.  my skin improved at about 35 (finally after years of break outs).

  • I am having a huge pregnancy acne issue.  I won't go anywhere without makeup and have not been to the gym for this reason.  I'm not even super vain, I would just scare small children:)  I still go to the derm without makeup so she can see exactly what we're dealing with. Once I had to go right from work and I brought my cleanser and a wash cloth in baggies to the derm office.  Not ideal, since them my skin is overall more red and irritted, but it was fine.

  • My face has been horrible lately-  I think it's likely a hormonal thing since this is the first time in 6+ years that I haven't been either pregnant and/or breastfeeding. Anyhow, I do not wear make-up to the dermatologist. I suppose you could wash it off once you're there, but that sounds too much of a hassle for me.
  • I don;t have a rash now because I stopped using over the conter breakout remedies.  If I use even a tiny bit of spot treatment, i end up with a burning rash.  And between going off the pill, getting pg then having a miscarriage it seems like hormones may be the issue.  All I know is that I haev tried everything and can't stop breaking out.  I didn't even have this bad of a problem as a teenager!  So sick of it and hoping the dermatologist can help me.

  • A lot of the over-the-counter acne medications have sulfa in them.  If you are allergic to sulfa drugs it's possible that is why you are breaking out.  My oldest DD had a sulfa reaction when she was about 3 years old.  When she was a teen we got her meds OTC and she would get terrible rashes.  We never connected it!  Poor girl.  She then cut her finger and the doc put on an ointment and bandaged it up.  A few hours later it was terribly swollen and when she took off the bandage it was at least twice its size!  Yep...there was sulfa in the ointment (Bactoban I think it was).  Be sure to check what you've used to see the active ingredients so you can tell the derm (they use a lot of sulfa drugs for acne).

BTW...I would go without make-up.  When we took our DD they wanted her make-up free because they didn't really have a "good" place for her to wash her face properly plus they wanted to see where her oily/dry areas were...which they could not see if she had just washed her face.
