3rd Trimester

Any runners thinking of doing some GU during labor?

For those of you not familiar with the product, it is a sports gel that gives you energy when you run long distances. It is basically some carbs for energy and I think there's some vitamin C & E in there too.

I thought of it when I got some for Xmas....what a good idea when I'm exhausted during labor and need to "push" through those last few miles!!

They also have jelly beans and gummies out there.....but not sure if I will be allowed to eat that during labor.

  • Oooh why had I not thought of that before?! Those gels are the only thing that got me through a marathon a few years ago. I am going to ask my Dr. if I can have some during labor. Great idea!!

  • Wow...hadn't thought about that as a supplement during labor - great idea!!:)  I love their Chocolate fudge flavor and that would be soooo awesome during labor (if they let you have it I suppose).

  • Thats funny.  Having GU had not crossed my mind at all, but I see where your mind is.  I have a whole box of the stuff at home!
  • My doula actually recommended either getting GU or honey sticks for labor - she said they work great and you can sneak them pretty easily if the hospital is strict about their "no food" policy.
  • I can have the option of not being hooked up to an IV but can still only have a clear liquid diet. I am pretty sure that GU wouldn't be allowed, but if you think it would help then I would ask your dr about it.

  • As a runner, I'll be talking to the midwives about GU's, energy jelly beans, mini-Cliff bars, Shotblocks, anything to keep electrolytes and a teeny bit of energy (and maybe caffeine) in me. If they say yes, they are going in the labor bag!

See what your HCP and hospital's policies are!

  • Great idea I'm going to look into getting some. If you are not doing IV fluids during labor, you will need to hydrate and keep your energy up- I plan on eating throughout my labor and have my doctor's support.?
