NBR: Question about Ikea

The other day I was with a friend and I told her that I wanted to furnish my home in Ikea.  She said that Ikea has cute things but that the quality isn't that great.  I thought Ikea was known for cheap but good quality furniture?  Mind you, she has very nice things from Pottery Barn and Ethan Allen so I'm wondering if she's comparing apples to oranges, being pretentious, or what?

Re: NBR: Question about Ikea

  • My question is, does Ikea have good quality?  Anyone have a lot of Ikea furniture and what do you think of it?

Basically our whole house is furnished with IKEA furniture.  When you're there, sit/lay/play with the furniture you're thinking of buying.  You can pretty easily tell which items are good quality and which aren't.  And assembly has a LOT to do with how an item holds up; if you assemble it incorrectly, it has a much higher chance of falling apart more easily.  I can't say enough good things about each piece of furniture we have from there.  GL!
  • I have had a lot of IKEA furniture and the quality is so-so.  I bought an Ektorp sofa and it was SUPER comfortable but after three years, it looked like it had been very well-used (i.e. the cushions were starting to sink into the couch).  And because you have to assemble most of the furniture yourself (shelves, dressers, desks, etc), I don't find that they really stand up to regular wear and tear... it's all particle board so it can break fairly easily.
  • I have bought a dresser, two bookshelves, and a tv stand from there. All of which is of good quality. It also depends on how good you are at putting stuff together. But we have had this furniture for awhile and it has all held up very well.hope this helps!!

  • Thank you! =)  I get the feeling my friend is used to a different type of furniture.    She made me paranoid but I'm glad to know that it is good quality.

This is false.  Many of their higher-end pieces are made only with solid wood.

Oh no!!!!!  I love their couches.  Yeah, I know their stuff is particle board which concerns me, as well.

  • I think it depends on what you purchase.  We bought an entertainment stand there post-college and it wasn't great but it was in the right price range.  Recently we bought a huge armoire and it is very sturdy, but it was more expensive.  I'm of the belief that you get what you pay for!

You are right - Our dining room table is made from solid pine.  My only issue with this table is that pine is a soft wood and easily dents.

  • We bought our solid wood dining room table with six chairs for less than $500.  It's awesome.  I agree with pp that some stuff there is great and some is cheap.  Happy shopping!

  • With Ikea you get what you pay for. That said most of our furniture is Ikea. We have a lot of the expedit collection and I love the entertainment centre. I really like their casegoods (wood furniture) but I wouldn't buy any of their upholstery. I find it really cheap looking and poor quality, you can tell when you sit in their sofa's.
