DH and I are going in tomorrow afternoon and we are going to be inquiring about an induction due to baby's size- 9lbs 11oz. We want to avoid a c-section if possible but the cut-off at our OB office for doing a c-section is 10lbs and since we are getting so close to that point, we are going to be asking our OB about an induction.
For those that are doing inductions, have your hospitals given you any specific instructions about things to do/not to do beforehand such as eating or drinking restrictions?
Also, is there a need for a cervix-softening drug (such as Cytotec or Cervadil) if your cervix is partially effaced and you are beginning to dilate? (As of last week, we were 1cm dilated and 50% effaced.)
Thanks for the help ladies!

I'm going into the hospital in 4 hours to have Cervadil inserted. I'm not AT ALL dilated-not even a fingertip! My OB said my cervix is pretty soft but that's about it. I get to eat before hand but they won't start the actual induction with Pitocin until tomorrow morning.
Good luck at your appointment tomorrow!
I was induced with DS and I had gel and then went home and came back the next day for the pitocin and they broke my water. I was 11 days past due. Even though I was induced I still ended up with a csection due to failure to progress. DS was 10lbs 3oz when born.
I didn't have any special instructions before being induced. I could eat and everything until I got there and they hooked me up. For lunch I think it was beef soup broth, yummy!
i will give you 2 views: mine and a friend's. mine was i was not dilated or anything so i had to have the cervidal (go with that over the other choice) and then pitocin. i was able to eat, drink and all of that the entire time--no restrictions. even after my water broke there was no restriction on what i put into my body. i did fine and vaginally delivered
my friend's--she goes in tomorrow morning at 8am and they are going to try cervidil first and try to avoid pitocin if they can. meaning if they can get labor going without an IV that is what they want to do. she is already 3cm so it may work out for her.
good luck
I wasn't allowed to eat after midnight the day I was induced (in case a c-section was necessary, which it was in the end).
They didn't use Cervadil, but I wish they had. Perhaps it would have helped. I ended up stalling at 6 cm after 24 hrs of labor. So, we did a c-section for my 7 lb 9 oz baby. I wish we hadn't induced in the first place, but my hospital gets nervous when diabetic/hypertension women go past their due dates.
I was induced with DS.... They didn't give me any eating/drinking restrictions before I came but once I got there I couldn't eat. They gave me cervix softening drugs and had me rest ( I was already dialated 1 cm and I can't remember how much I was effaced). They had me go in later in the afternoon, 5 pm if I remember correctly, So that the cervix stuff could work over night. I started contractions without pitocin at 2am and progressed from there. They had to give me pitocin later on though.....
Hope that answers some of your q's. Im sure every doctor is different though
Thanks for posting these questions! We're scheduled for an induction on the 4th. We go in @ 5am and my OB said she'll show up about 9am to break my water. Other than that we're clueless... nothing else was said.
PS our baby isn't as big as yours, but we begged to be induced (I know that sounds horrible) by the end of the year and my OB said no plus she's booked.
Good luck tomorrow!!! Keep us posted.
Induction set up for Wed morning...Instruction sheet said to call before 5:30am to confirm, eat a light breakfast before coming to hospital unless otherwise instructed.
To my knowledge, I will not require cervadil (sp?). I am 2cm and 80% though. My OB just mentioned she gets in around 7am and that we'd break my water and get moving....(No FB postings about my induction please if you have me on there....trying to avoid the waiting room ppls!)
I was induced 10 days past my due date with just pitocin. When I went to the hospital I was 2cm dilated and 70% effaced, so I didn't have cervadil. My induction was scheduled for 9am, and my midwife told me to eat a good breakfast before coming in, because once the pitocin drip started I couldn't eat anything.
Good luck, I hope everything goes well for you.
