Did you take popularity into account when naming DC?

Dh is in LOVE with a very popular name and doesn't seem to think that the popularity matters.  I on the other hand would rather my kid not be 1 of 10 with the same name in her class.

But dh's name is Dan so I guess he knows better than me about having a popular name.

What do you think?  Do you care if the name is uber popular currently?

FTR the name is Isabel, I like it, but it's popular and with the Twilight/Bella thing I fear it's going to be more popular and then the whole issue of "did you name your kid after that character" blah blah blah.

I'm pulling for Addison, but I guess that's sorta popular these days too.

And somehow this turned into a which name do you like best post...

Re: Did you take popularity into account when naming DC?

  • I did think about it. Its hard, names are cyclical and its only natural for certain names to be popular at the same time. You can think you  have a not so popular name, and then boom, two years later its everywhere!

I would rather have a name I loved that was popular then a name I liked that was original.

    btw LOVE Addison : )

  • We did take popularity into account.  Originally, if this baby were a girl, her name was going to be Isabel after DH's grandmother.  That name is just way way too popular for us now, so it got nixed early on.

This baby is a boy, and the name we have chosen hasn't ever been more than something like #350 on the social security list in any year that I checked.

I was one of 5 Lisa's in my classes in high school...so having a name that isn't super super common was important to us.

If I was choosing between Isabel and Addison...I'd go with Addison.

  • Both my first and middle name were in the top 10 girls' names list for the twenty years surrounding my birthdate. I say don't do it!! I know it doesn't bother some people, but I always hated being one of many. I had to teach my friends in college to yell out my last name when they wanted to get my attention on campus because there were just too many times that I would turn around when some other Ashley was being called. I had to be Ashley E. or the brown-haired Ashley. Needless to say, when we named Eve (really Everette) popularity was a big factor when we were deciding.

Edited to remove a spelling error. Apparently, I can't type when I'm passionate about something.

  • Yes, it was a factor for me. If Grey had been a girl his name would have been BellaRose. Then the name got super popular and *then* the whole twilight thing happened. I still love the name...but im a big enough twilight nerd that it just would not have been cool to name my baby Bella.

I tried to stay out of the top 100 names. I fell in love with the name Winter the moment I saw it in use for a girl, incidentally...on Celebrity Rehab. LOL. it is the name of Tawny Kitaen's daughter (but she spells it Wynter). it happens to not be a popular name.

  • Yes, I look at the top 20 names for CA and the US (Social Security Administration list only - I don't think the other lists are very reliable) and wouldn't choose a name that was on either. I have a VERY common name for my year of birth and I hated always being called first name plus last initial in school. My method is no guarantee that M won't be in school with another M since his is a name that is somewhat popular, though at #37 on the SS list it probably won't be as bad for him as it was for me (my name was #2 on the SS list for my year of birth).

  • not with my kids, i like the name Isabella.

  • Yes...but you never can predict what will become popular. My BFF named her daughter Ava when it wasn't popular, and it's been in the top 10 pretty much since she was 2. Ha.

FWIW, I thought for sure we'd get "Sabrina the Teenage Witch" comments and we only have heard it once - and it was really odd, the clerk kind of whispered, "is she a witch?" - like she wanted her to be a witch. So I dismissed that crazy chick. Otherwise, the only other time we hear it in relation to a character is the movie Sabrina, which is cool with me.

Unless I loved a name, I'd probably avoid it if it was in the top 10, top 20. But if I loved it, I don't think I'd care that much...

  • We did.

Our girl names list was more out there but all family names so they were all "real" names.

Our boy name list was much more traditional but we scrapped anything too popular - and coincidentally those were also names that one of us would have vetoed anyway. (like William but calling him Liam)

I like Addison, but it's a suburb of Dallas so I have an aversion for that reason. I like Isabel, and luckily it's been popular for longer than Twilight, but I see where you're coming from. Being the 5th Isabel in your class has to be irritating for both the child and the teacher.

That being said - I got made fun of in elementary school for having an old lady name (and got called auntie Em so much that even hearing it in the Wizard of Oz makes me want to throat punch Dorothy) and then it shot to the top of the name list.  So it's really hit or miss with what's popular when your LO comes along.

  • We do consider the popularity...for example we have both like Madeline (not sure how we'd spell it) for a long time (years) but it got really popular for a while.  I also always wanted to name my daughter Emma after my great grandmother - but DH veto'd that one too because of friends.

We obviously weren't too concerned when we named Ryan though...at the time, the biggest concern was "make-fun-ability" of the name.

Nobody said life would be easy, they just promised it would be worth it.

Isabel was dh's grandmother's name, and the middle name he wants to use is his other grandmother's name.

I'm giving in on the middle name since it's important to him....but am seriously wishing I hadn't told him what his grandmother's real name was.  She went by Margaret and he apparently never knew that wasn't her real name....men I swear.

  • I love Isabel and Addison!  Both are on my "like" list.  DH and I will try to stay away from super popular names when the time comes.  FWIW, DH's name is not common AT ALL, and my name, although somewhat common, has a different spelling that the most popular version.  Kinda nice to be different!

  • Yeah, we take popularity into account. One of the things we loved about Estelle was that it wasn't on any "top" lists. When I got pregnant the first time, Joshua was our top boy name but then we just got so tired of it because it is so common.

I love the name Addison...if we were having a girl, a name we (I) were considering was Addison. And while we're on the name topic - before we found out we were having a boy, DH was set on Natalie for a girl name!

  • This is actually something I struggle with. I love my daughter's name and think it fits her perfectly, but some days I regret naming her something that is so uber popular. I guess I'll know more how I feel (and how she feels) about it when she gets into school and it's more of an issue.

I honestly wouldn't be surprised if she eventually chose to be called by her middle name (Kate). FWIW, I think we'll go a little less popular for our next kiddo's name.

Oh and I LOVE both of the names you mentioned!!

  • Nope we just went with what we liked.

  • Obviously I'm way on the other end of the popular names spectrum, but if it was a name I really loved, I wouldn't care if it was popular at the moment. I much prefer Isabel (with that spelling, too, since I love the author Isabel Allende) to Addison because IMO Isabel is more of a classic name whereas Addison seems more trendy to me. I'm a big fan of classic names for girls.

  • yep .. we nixed the boy name we had always wanted to use since a bizillion boys between when we decided on it and when we actually got pg were named that .. our hunter would have been one of 5 in his room.

i liked a ton of classic girls names - caroline, lindsey, kristin, caitlin .. then we decided to go classic and family .. and i don't know of any other rosalinds.

  • Yes, we did have popularity under consideration and generally tried to avoid the ones in the top 100.

If, however, your choices are between Isabel and Addison, I like Isabel better :)

  • I was one of 6 Angela's in my elementary school and grade level growing up.  I was Angela K and hated it.  I went through a brief phase in second grade where I would not answer to Angela and only wanted to be called Faith (my middle name).  So that said I didn't want my kids to be one of many.  s
  • Yes and no. While neither Eleanor and Annabelle are popular baby names right now, their nicknames are much more popular (Ella and Anna are the nicknames, though we never call Eleanor Ella, but other people do - not sure how it'll be with Annabelle yet). I didn't care that the nicknames were popular because I love the names so much, and they have meaning for us - they are more than just "pretty" names that we picked out a book.?

If we ever have a boy we are naming him Jack after my dad, no question about that - and I don't care how popular it is (and I know its uber popular right now), its important to me to name my firstborn son after my dad (and my DH agrees, so we're good). I think if the name means enough to you/dh, and you're going with the name not just because its popular, but because of family history/meaning than the popularity of a names doesn't matter. I would much rather have a name that meant something, has history with me/family but was popular, than just a name that I thought sounded good, etc. Thats just my 2 cents. ?

  • I am. I too LOVE Isabel and it has been one of my top two names since 1996! That being said, we're probably going to pass on it for the specific issue of popularity. Wish it weren't so, but it is:(
  • I would consider it (and we did when naming Charlotte).  One name we loved from a long time ago was in the top 5 and we heard it a lot (more trendy than classic) so we nixed it.  However, had we 100% loved a name from the get-go that we agreed on, then probably not.  Or if the name had special meaning - like we may name a future son after both our dads.  It's funny how popular grandmother names are - so many people have told me their grandmothers were names Charlotte.  Mine was Emily and we would consider that name for a future daughter.
  • We're definitely taking it into consideration.  Ava was my favorite name for years, but it's gotten so popular I've wanted to nix it from the list, but it is DH's favorite name, and he doesn't understand my aversion to it due to popularity.  I have several friends with "my" name (Nicole), and I don't want LO to one of ten in her classroom.

We have about five weeks to decide, and we don't even have a short list at this point.  Indifferent

  • As somebody who named her child Isabella (=]).... it didn't matter too much to me, but that was because I was dead set on that name.... since years before she was even conceived (waaay before twilight, and even way before Katherine Heigl's character on Grey's Anatomy). It did bother me that it was so popular..but not enough to give it up.

For what its worth - I've yet to meet another kid similar to Izzie's age with her name.

    I love Addison!

  • I do - only because as a Jessica I was always one of at least 5 others. Growing up I was ALWAYS 'big' Jessica or Cousin Jessica or Jennys Friend Jessica. I hated it. I LOVE all the top names; like Emma & Isabelle & Emily but wont do it.

My rule is at least not the top 10 - but whose to say Brooklyn wont creep its way up to the top 10 anyways???

I guess it doesnt really matter - Both are BEAUTIFUL names imo. I love addison because Im a fan of the NN Addy.

Addison is becoming more & more popular with Gray's Anat.

Im the last one that should comment though - I cant even narrow my list down to 10. :P?

  • yes, but it wasn't the top priority... the priority went like this:

    1) easy to spell (I have to spell my name for EVERYONE)

    2) make fun-ability. Can it be mocked? And does it pass the resume test?

    3) popularity- I have an uncommon name, DH has a very common name.... we're from two ends of the spectrum and agreed that we didn't want a top 10 unless we were in love with it (both of us)

     Jenna fit our criteria well.

I really like both names, and in the end, popularity doesn't matter if you both love the names..... good luck! I can't wait to meet your Isabel or Addison!

  • Love love love both names. I love their nicknames as well (izzy and Addy).

But yes, we've discussed popularity and would likely steer clear. Actually, we have arguments over baby names (I apparently like names that are too weird or "too white/preppy". DH is Cuban, has a Cuban last name and our children have the potential to be much darker skinned than I (although DH is quite fair, but his mom and sister are very dark, so who knows what we'll end up with) and I know a "latino" name would fit better w/ his last name, but I feel that is taking away from our future child's other backgrounds (I'm Italian and Irish)...so we argue. I like some very traditional Irish names as well as some that he considers "preppy".

I'm a Molly and there weren't any Mollys when I was in school, and now only know a few and at the time I didn't like it, but now I really do (I was named after my Aunt, which was really special for me since we're so close). DH is an Alexander, but he didn't have a lot of Alex's since he was in Miami in predomenantly Cuban schools so most of his friends had Latino names and I think he liked that he didn't have a name everyone else did .

so ridiculously long story short: yes, we'll consider it and probably choose names below the top 100 on the social security names list

  • Yes we did, I did not want a popular name for A's first name however her middle name is Isabel which I love.
