Pedi wants me to supplement w/ formula?

DD had her 9 month checkup today.  She weighs 16 pounds and 6 ounces and has dropped a percentile in the charts.  The pedi recommended giving one bottle of formula a day.  I really wanted to avoid formula all together and move straight to cows milk at 1 year.  Are there any other options?

I have a freezer stash of about 180 ounces.  Can I give her that first and pump at the same time and maybe be able to skip formula if my milk supply holds up?  She thinks that being pg again is making my supply take a dip, but DD doesn't seem hungry when she is done nursing.  And she comes off herself when she is done.

And obviously, I want to do what is best for my DD and I have nothing against formula.  Just for my own personal goals I was trying to make it to 1 year.

Thanks for any input!

Re: Pedi wants me to supplement w/ formula?

  • I would probably try the pumped milk...but I would probably discuss it with the pedi first...

I would think that she would turn down the bottle if she is satisfied with bf'ing?  Not sure, but that makes sense to me...

  • My pedi told me to do the same thing but for a different reason.  Dd had b/w done at her 9 month appt. and it came back slightly anemic.  The pedi called the next day (not my regular pedi) and said to start giving her formula since I was planning to wean her at 1 year anyway.  I'm giving her Tri-Vi-Sol with Iron and making sure she's eating meat at least once a day....I haven't given her any formula yet.  I want to make sure I'm doing what is best for her as well but switching to formula at 9 months and whole milk at 12 months seems like a lot of changes in a short amount of time.  I have to take her back in a month and get repeat b/w done to see if there is improvement. I think I'm going to wait and see what the results are after that appt. and decide from there.  Unlike you I have ZERO freezer stash left (I'm jealous) so if DH and I go out without her I'm going to have to cave and have my parents or ILs give her a bottle of formula.

If dd isn't acting hungry after nursing I don't see why you'd want to make her another bottle.  You could try with some of your freezer stash and see how she responds but such you have such a great stash I'd for sure use that before switching to formula.

  • Thanks for your thoughts!

I am def going to talk to her about using the freezer stash first.  Also, I feel the same way about switching to formula and then cows milk so close together.  She is eating meat once a day and we just got the okay on cheese, so I am going to try that as well.

I also feel like she is eating enough but she is sooooo mobile.  She crawls, pulls up and is cruising non stop that I feel that might be part of the percentile drop.

We go back in a month for another weight check.

  • i would think continuing to BF and upping her solids intake would do the trick.  when my niece was actually losing weight around 10-11 months my sister was advised to continue feeding her solids at each meal until she was obviously done - not when they were out of food or wanted her to be done.  that's what they did and she started putting on weight.  i just don't really see the need to introduce formula at this late stage in the game.

  • DS dropped from 10th% to 5th% at some point during his first year and the pedi never once wanted me to start formula.  I really think that if your DD is still gaining weight and not falling way behind, there is no reason at all to start formula at this point.  Perhaps upping solid feeds will help, but many babies drop on the percentiles a little bit when they start becoming mobile and burning all of that food off and by the next appointment they are back where they were before (that's the way DS was).  Anyway, I'd go with your mommy gut on this one...
