LO will be 4 weeks old on Thursday. It seems like all he does is EAT! I swear, sometimes it's every hour to hour and a half. He usually eats about 3 ounces, but sometimes will take an ounce or 2 and then want more an hour later. Is he supposed to be eating more than 3 ounces per feeding by this point? At my 2 week pedi appt. he had gained almost a pound and grew an inch and a quarter and I asked her about it because I was worried he was eating too much and too often - but she said I really can't feed him too much at this stage. It just seems insane how often he wants to eat - am I just not giving him enough per feeding? Anyone else have a LO who does/did this? Up until a few nights ago he was sleeping 3 or 4 hours at a time at night, but the last couple of nights he's been waking up every 2 to 3 hours. Is this what happens when they have a growth spurt? How long does that usually last? I don't want to be the mom that just feeds her kid every time he peeps, but even when I wait it out to see if he's really hungry, he is - rooting, sucking - definite feeding cues. What the heck do I do!?
Re: How much should he be eating?
If he's giving you the signs that he's hungry, I would go ahead and increase the amount each feeding. My LO is taking between 3 1/2 - 4 oz each feeding and is feeding about every 4 hours. His last feeding of the night is usually around 11pm and he will sleep for 5 hours. I was worried about increasing the amount he was taking but our pedi said the same thing - you can't over-feed at this stage and your baby will let you know when they're done eating. So far, it's worked for us.
I'm not sure if you're FF or BFing but my LO eats between 1-3 hours all day and night. In fact, it seems more frequent in the evenings and at night during the day. I am BFing so I don't know the amt per feeding but it does feel constant - it seems as soon as I finish one feeding I am already getting ready to start the next.
I think we might be in a growth spurt phase, I had a few days recently where she ate 11-12 times in a day, so I'm thinking that might have been the 10 day spurt Cora mentioned above. I guess I should prepare myself for the 3 week growth spurt! On that note I'm off to put on some nipple cream, drink some water and nap. Hang in there!
