remedy for wedding band rash?

I think this was posted a few months ago, but I'm trying to find a remedy for the dry, red skin that is under my wedding band.  I've tried hydrocortisone and aquaphor and neither has helped and it's driving me crazy....any other ideas before I go to the dermatologist?  TIA

  • Scrub your rings with a toothbrush and toothpaste or take them to be cleaned by a jeweler. You also might want to stop wearing them alltogether until the area heals. A dermatologist will probably recommend a cortisone cream of some sort.

Just take care to keep the area dry - take your rings off while cooking, cleaning, etc. Good luck! HTH!

Exactly, clean your rings, keep the finger clean and dry, you may have to pull them off every now and then and not where them all the time. I don't wear mine to bed and bascially take them off as soon as I get home. Get in the habit of popping them in a jewlery box before you do anything else.

  • When I was pregnant with P, I seemed to be "allergic" to white gold.  Are your rings white gold?  My platinum wedding bands did not seem to affect me, but my 10K white gold class ring did.  If you get better after not wearing your rings and the rash comes back, could you consider changing the metal of them, (not sure if yellow gold will cause any reactions)?  I know it seems like an expensive solution, but if they are your wedding rings, might be worth considering.
  • I have to say this happens to me about twice a year and every time it does not matter what else I do, nothing makes it go away until I take my rings to the jeweler and get them cleaned.  but I do also take them off at night until it clears up.  but the professional ring cleaning is the only thing that does the trick completely.

  • Thanks!  I do take my rings off every night and also after I wash my hands to make sure my fingers are completely dry.  Maybe they just need a really good cleaning at the jewelers.  I know this happened to me a few years ago and the dermatologist prescribed something that worked, but I was trying to avoid a trip to the doctor.  Rings are platinum, so it's not an allergy issue.  Thanks for all the advice!

Ditto this. Nothing helped me until I took it to the jewelers to be professionally cleaned.  Now, no problems at all!
