new and 5w u/s ?

Hi ladies. So this morning I went for my first u/s at 5wks and there were two sacs. One is bigger and in front of the other. The smaller one is a concern for me b/c I am afraid that it won't thrive. The nurse said that there shouldn't be anything to be concerned about right now but it's possible for it to vanish. I go back next week for 6wk u/s and heartbeat check. My question is has anyone of you had a twin that was smaller than the other and hiding behind the other that made it to delivery? TIA for your help and I hope I get to stick around here.

Re: new and 5w u/s ?

  • Congrats on your BFP!! And welcome to the MoM board!

At my 5wk u/s, one was smaller. My RE said it could go either way.By the next u/s, it was totally thriving along!

  • At my 5w u/s, there was one sac that was really small and they called it a potential second sac.  They weren't sure it would make it, but so far I'm 22w and am pg with twins!  The second sac (baby A) has always measured a few days behind baby B through my entire pregnancy.  But she looks healthy and strong from my latest ultrasound.

Good luck and congrats on your BFP!

  • It's totally normal for them to be different sizes, even if you did IVF and know they were conceived at the same time.  Mine usually measured a few days different of each other.

I'm sure you already know this but I'll say it anyway -- the heartbeat is just starting in week 6 so if you don't see any (or just one) at your next u/s don't let it scare you.  Hours or a day can literally be the difference in you seeing a HB or not so if you haven't scheduled the u/s yet you might want to make it for later in week 6 vs. earlier.  The wait sucks but you are more likely to see the HB(s) later in the week.

    Congrats!

  • Congrats x 2!!

At my 5 week u/s, one was twice as big as the other. The initial size of the sacs seems to have had zero effect on my babies. I'm over 34 weeks and they are both thriving. One is 4lb10oz and the other is 4lb11oz.  GL!

  • I had a u/s at 6 weeks and they saw one heartbeat and one baby.  At 12 weeks... two babies!
  • congrats and welcome!

at my 5w US there were 2 sacs, one slightly smaller than the other- and neither of them had anything in them (no fetal pole, yolk sac, etc) so i was freaked out thinking i had 2 blighted ovums... just 3 days later we went back and there was everything in the sacs- including HB's.... and now i've got my boys :)

try not to stress--- yes, vanishing twin happens- but there's nothing you can do to make it NOT happen  - just send lots of love to those little babies and pray that they both stay healthy - that's what I did - it helped me feel better at least :)

  • Congrats and welcome!! PP said it all. T&Ps that they are both going strong at your next appt!!

  • Thank you ladies so much for your responses. It has really calmed my nerves. I keep the faith that both my babies will thrive and make it thru.
  • At 5 weeks 4 days, my sacs were the same size, but there were only yolk sacs, no babies.  The dr was very cautious, and said I was "possibly" having twins.  By 6w 3d, there were 2 babies, with 2 beautiful heartbeats.

Sending you lots of good T&P!

  • Congrats!  I didn't learn of my triplets until 11w 2d but they all measure differently (even though we only had sex one day that month).

    Baby A: 11w 1d (identical twin)

    Baby B: 11w 2d (identical twin)

    Baby C: 11w 5d (fraternal triplet)
