If you pump...(my first time - question)...

I tried to BF DD but had terrible lactation consultants and since I had had a breast reduction I just figured I could not anyways and gave up (SO wish I didn't).

This time I tried pumping in the hospital and low and behold was able to!! I was beyond excited and now pump ever 3 hours for Jack (he cannot tolerate formula yet and is still in the NICU).

I am getting more and more each day. I pump every 3 hours and usually get a total of 20mL. This does not seem like much to me.

I had the twins on Tuesday so it has really only been 4 days. I am wondering if this is normal (or maybe just my normal) or if I need more time to allow more milk to come in...

Re: If you pump...(my first time - question)...

  • yes this is normal. you should get more every day. keep on pumpin'!

  • Don't give up; it definitely takes a while, especially after a C-Section. You might want to try skin to skin contact with the babies. It's called "kangaroo care" in the NICU, and it REALLY helped my milk come in, plus it's a great bonding experience :).
  • Totally normal, IMO. Keep pumping and it keeps on coming!! I can remember thinking "is it going to be enough?" to "OMG, I've tricked the pump into thinking I need to feed every kid on the block!"

    GL!

  • I'm sorry to butt in here but I was lurking around different boards and saw your question.  I'm  a NICU nurse and the normal we tell our moms is at the end of the first week you should be pumping 200 mL in 24 hours and at the end of two weeks you should be pumping 500 mL in 24 hours.  You are only four days out so you are doing GREAT.

Just remember, no matter how little you get at each pumping, you're body will only know to make milk if you continue to pump every three hours just how you're doing now, no matter how little you see in the bottle.

I hope this helps, and no matter what happens with your supply, you are doing a great job.

  • It sounds like you're doing really well!  I'm 12 days pp and am only getting about 10 ml's each time I pump.  So keep it up you're doing great!
