1st Trimester

Calling all cat moms

So we have cats. Four of them.  My mom is freaking me out about having cats and the baby.  I have no intention of getting rid of my pets because I'm having a baby.  Plenty of babies grow up around cats.  If there is an issue after the baby is born we'll address it at that time but I'm not throwing out my cats as a precaution.

Anyone have a baby who has a pet cat(s)?

  • I also have 4 cats. My husband thinks were weeding them down to 2.. but he's in such a quote shock when I serve him with papers before I give up my babies.

My biggest worry is the shedding. I try to brush them but they shed so much.. might shave them to solve that problem - J/K

My cats have been very loveable to me, and I hope that does not change after the babies are here.

  • my SD had some breathing issues and her mother was convinced it was asthma (it wasn't) and told us to get rid of our cats. Well, I wasn't going to and when i started doing research i found a study, i can't seem to reference it now, but if you google long enough i'm sure you can find it, that says that children who grow up with cats are healthier in the long run b/c their bodies are used to the different allergens and thery develop an immunity to them and they are less likely to get asthma. Interesting, huh?

That being said, my friend has a cat who does sleep int he bassinet with ehr baby, or used to. One day she woke up and the cat was on top of the baby. The cat wasn't being mean, just trying to cuddle but could have hurt the baby. Since then they sleep witht he door shut and the cat out of their room. So I would be aware of it def. but not get rid of ur cats.

My two aren't going anywhere, but i am enjoying nto having to clean the litterbox anymore!

My MIL freaked out about our cats suffocating the baby b/c the baby smells like milk and i shut her down pretty quickly by telling her it was an oldwifes tale and I had research to support it.

  • We love our indoor kitty very much and her place in our family will remain exactly the same.

  • I don't have any cats, but I've been scratched by a few. lol. That's the only thing that would worry me. I definitely wouldn't get rid of them, just be careful.

We have a dog and I've been lightly tugging on his ears and tail so he's used to it when the baby gets big enough to start torturing the poor thing. IMO, animals are part of your family. You wouldn't get rid of an older child because he/she could potentially hurt the new baby, so why get rid of your pets?

  • We have 2 cats. They are great with DS. He walks around trying to snap his fingers and says "kitty kitty kitty" Its so cute. The only problem we have ever had is DS getting into the cat box..but a gate was an easy fix

  • You can trim your kitty's so they do not shed as much..

  • we wont be getting rid of my cat.. and, im still changing the litter box. of course i wash my hands when im finished, but my ob said unless you plan on licking your hands or the cat poop, you're probably not at risk, especially with an exclusively indoor cat. she said its a bigger risk in europe and also where there are field mice that a cat might get a hold of. we do not live in europe, and we do not have field mice!

  • We have 2 cats, and they do fine with DD.  One is skittish anyways, so if anyone looks at her funny she bolts.  The other is how DD learned to be gentle.  In her almost 2 years on this planet, DD has only been bitten once, and she very much deserved it.

  • I have 2 cats and a toddler.  My cats were freaked at first when we brought Jude home (one cat is a serious pee-er and peed on SO much of Jude's stuff.. ugh!) but they dealt with it and are totally fine with him now.  Jude carries one of our cats around and feeds them treats.. they love it!
  • We have 3 cats.  They have been no issue for DD.  One completely avoids her.  One stays close but not too close (this one sometimes can be caught sleeping in the crib, just randomly).  One sticks around for some "abuse" and tail pulling.  The one that avoids her has hissed at her before, but since she is never around, we aren't too concerned at this time.

We try our best to keep the cat hair out of her things.

But overall things are way better than expected.  No acting out by the cats at all.

    Good luck!

  • We have 2 cats & there is NO way we would get rid of them. I got this spray from Petco called Boundry to keep our cats away from the Christmas tree & it seemed to work ok. If it is safe for children I plan on spraying it around the crib/bassinet when we get one so that the cats won't go near the baby in there. I've also heard it is a good idea to have your SO or family bring home a hospital blanket for your cats/dogs to smell before you get home...this way the baby won't be so "new."

  • We have four cats and they aren't going anywhere.  They were all rescues and I couldn't imagine what would happen to them if we got rid of them.  The poor things!

We plan on working with the cats once I get into my third trimester.  Such as wearing the baby carrier on me, having a doll to pretend with, etc.  We have some baby items now, such as a bassinet, and we have already trained them to stay away from it, which they do.

  • We've got 2 and it has been a total non-issue. They didn't really react at all when we brought her home from the hospital, and have shown minimal interest since then. We did start getting house cleaners to come out every 2 weeks to help with the fur, but other than keeping her out of the room where their litter is (when she becomes mobile), it really has not been a problem at. all.
    Dear Bump: You suck.
  • i have 1 cat now, we had to put our 30lbs 16 year old cat down last may. i really hope that the baby doesnt become allergic to it as i would hate to give up my little man, he's 7 years old and such a baby, he's a medium haired indoor cat that craves attention. the reason im slightly afraid the baby will be allerigic is becuase i was Deathly allergic as a child, pretty much from birth until i was about 18-19 years old. that allergy somehow dissapeared and i've had cats pretty much since then.  he does shed a fair amount so what im going to do this spring is get him a lion cut, (Im doing it once before the baby comes so he gets used to it, becuase its giong to happen again just before baby arrives)

my sister has a long haired cat and her 2 year old daughter has no problems with him, he takes all sorts of abuse from her!  lol . she recently got him a lion cut and said the shedding has gone down drastically..

also, my cat is TERRIFIED of my niece, even when she was a baby, so i kinda think that the cat is going to pretty much stay as far away as possible  when the baby arrives.lol..

  • We have a cat and it has not been a problem with DS at all.  My MIL always tries to tell me that the cat will smother the baby, but the cat really wants nothing to do with DS.

Our fiends have 4 or 5 cats and a dog and their DS is great around them.

If you do find that your cats like to snuggle with baby, there are crib tents you can get to keep them out of cribs.
