How did you tell your identicals apart in the beginning?

Hi everyone,

I'm wondering how you told your identical twins apart when you first brought them home?  In the hospital they'll have a hospital ID bracelet but after that, what did you use (nail polish on one nail, an ankle bracelet, any more ideas) to tell which is which?  I'm scared I'll mix up my daughters ;)

Thanks!

  • I have been thinking about this too! Looking forward to hearing some answers!

  • i never did the nail polish thing (their nails were SOOOO tiny!) but we did:

    - leave hospital bracelets on

    - put hats with their initials on them

    - always kept them in order in the crib

    - wrote on the bottom of their feet with crayola marker

    - immediately looked for identifying details (but those were v hard to find at first.)

  • My younger brothers are identical, so my parents did the nail polish thing and also wrote on the bottom of their feet.  Also, my mom always tried to put each one in specific colors.  My brother M always got blue or green, and B always got red or orange.  That way she could tell at a quick glance which was which.

    Good luck!

  • We did paint a toenail, just to be sure; however, because you are the mommy, you will find little differences and have no problem telling them apart :). DH just mastered the who's who game, but I never had an issue like I thought I would!
  • don't dress them alike. It helps a ton if they are wearing completely different outfits.

but it was also easy for us because our kids had a huge weight difference.

  • Ours also had a big weight difference at birth, so it was easy to tell them apart. I was so worried I wouldn't be able to, but they have always looked different to me (and DH too).  We always point out a couple things to other people when they ask, like one has a small dot on her forehead & her hair has a swirly colic in the front.
  • We kept their medical bracelets on for about a week, but after that I could tell them apart.  I did paint a toenail on Joey for family members to tell at first when they were taking care of the boys.

  • We didn't know the girls were ID until they were 11m but we kept Molly in purple (or in something with purple) and Lilly in pink for a long while. Truthfully, they didn't really start looking alike until they were 3m or 4m old. We did the DNA test bc everyone thought they were ID but we were pretty sure they were fraternal. Yea... opps :P

  • We left the hospital bracelets on for as long as possible.  You may note some feature that will help - one of my girls has a freckle on the bottom of one of her toes.

You may be surprised.  We really didn't have too much trouble telling them apart.

  • i have been wandering the same thing.  I'm 14 weeks today, and that is one of my biggest worries...not being able to tell my babies apart.  I think they are boys, but we haven't been given the 100% yet.  However, if they are girls, i was thinking about having little bracelets made with their names engraved on them.
