Breastfeeding

Anyone do this - or any suggestions? Long

My DD is going on six weeks.  We started with formula at the hospital, because where I delivered offered NO breastfeeding support.  I tried to offer my breast at every feeding, but my DD just screamed...  the day I was discharged, I had an appt. with a LC at another hospital.  There we learned about the bait and switch method, and we then began to"practice" nursing, and supplemented with formula.  My DD always screamed at the breast.  When she was about one week old, I tried a nipple shield - it was a success : )  My daughter was OK with that.  However, she did not drink til she was full, rather content.  So 20 min. later, I'd "top her off" with some pumped milk and/or formula.

When she was 2 weeks old, we took her to the Pedi. to see  if there was anything she suggested that would be related to her fussiness/colic - we had a 6 hours crying bout that just about pushed us over the edge.....    It appears as if she has a problem digesting milk proteins.  I was told to go dairy free, and to supplement with hypo-allergenic formula.  They said it would take 2-3 weeks to get all of the dairy out of my system, so to pump and freeze until them.

My DD is a completely different baby on the formula. I however am having a hard time going dairy free...  I eat dairy and don't even know it...   I am still pumping and freezing  -  however have not tried to BF since then, because I'm afraid she will be in pain again because I have had dairy here and there since then.  I have read that some babies outgrow this around 3-4 months... anyone experience this?  I am hoping...

Does anyone have any experience re-introducing BF after the DC was formula fed for several weeks?  Especially one that required a nipple shield? Was is a success?  I don't mind pumping and freezing for now, but I know my freezer will be out of room soon.  Do you think there my DD is getting all the important benefits if she has to wait several months to have the BM?  Even if it's as long as 6 months and she takes it with her cereal?  Any thoughts/suggestions?

TIA!

  • I don't have any experience with some of the questions you asked, but I wanted to commend you for sticking with it!  I really hope it works out for you!

If your DD does outgrow the dairy issue you could try mixing BM with the formula to familiarize her to the taste of BM.  I think your DD will benefit from the BM regardless of when she gets it.

  • I also had to supplement with formula bc of a dairy protein allergy. The new diet is really hard at first and I am not going to lie, it sucks real bad. However, it is so worth it. The differance it made in Noah is amazing. We realized there was problem bc he had blood in his diapers. The formula fixed this problem the first day. I only went on formula for 2 days. He was having a really hard time not nursing. He cried and cried and it just broke my heart so I went back to nursing while changing my diet. I am now slowly introducing "hidden dairy" back in to my diet(still no milk, cheese or yogurt). We did a shield in the beginning and he self weened about the same time all the dairy mess was going on. If possible nursing without it made a big differance in how long it took him to eat. He went from taking about 50mins. to eat to under 10mins..

Hope luck and good job for sticking it out!!
