4 mo. checkup...forgot to ask about solids...

When I had them for their checkup on Wednesday, I (of course) left my list of questions at home - since we're lucky if we have both babies and everything else we need when we leave the house!

I completely forgot to ask about solids and they won't go back until they're a week into their 6th month.  AND I'm totally clueless about the whole thing.  :)

Any tips on what to do and about when to do it?  I don't think either baby is ready yet, but I always thought you were supposed to at least start cereal before 6 mos. and then at 6 they'd start on sweet potatoes and such.

Thanks!

  • I agree with the pp - you should really wait until 6 months.  We waited until 6 months adjusted for ours.

If you start before 6 months it's purely for fun and for you, not for the baby because they don't need it that early.

  • The AAP says between 4-6mo... some kids are ready at 4mo - that's when we started Griffin- he did great... the twins had no interest at 4mo - so we stopped (only tried once) and waited until 5mo.... but then stopped again because Gray only wanted solids and not his bottle for a couple days - so we're going to work back into solids with him since he's doing great with his bottles again (he has reflux and is a very picky eater when it comes to the bottle -but he LOVES solids).

We started with rice cereal - because it has the lowest level of allergy probability... then moved into veggies and fruits.... any order is fine - just do one thing for about 4-5 days to make sure there are no allergies.

  • we just started avocado (just shy of 5 months) and both my babies absolutely love it but we started only for fun.  they like having it in their mouth (and they love chewing on the spoon since they are in early stages of teething) but they dont swallow much.

I figure since they enjoy it, we'll play until 6 months and then start taking it  more seriously (and work on swallowing).  They dont need solids at all, breastmilk and formula has all the nutrients they need...so dont sweat it.

  • We did not start any solids until 6 months.  I think it's fine to ask at your 6 month appt. your pedi's recommendations.  We started with fruits and veggies at 6 months and then did cereal a few weeks later.  I wouldn't worry too much until after the appointment.  We followed www.wholesomebabyfood.com for most of our information.
