Sent home again but worried

So from my 2 previous posts... my usual doc sent me to the hospital Thurs.  because of worsening protein in my urine and contractions.  On-call doc (different one) sent me home and didn't feel it was urgent, but had me come back in tonight for an NST and to return a 24-hour urine.  I already haven't really trusted this doc when I saw her during my pregnancy because she always just said "is there anything I can do for you today?" and would let me go.

Anyway, my protein level from the 24-hour urine came back at 294.  I read online that over 300 is considered preeclampsia, does this sound right?  Well my BP has kept creeping up for over a week and now the on-call doc was concerned enough to put me on bedrest until my NST on Monday.

My worry:  We're going into a weekend now and I have rising blood pressure and rising protein in my urine.  37 weeks with identical twins.  To me it seemed like a better option to just deliver rather than waiting for the situation to be worse, or even to a level that is detrimental to the twins or to me.

Am I just being paranoid or would you be worried too?

  • i would be worried too, but they work weekends so you dont need to worry about the dr not being around. is there anything they said you should do? feet up, water, etc?

  • Yes, 300 = preeclampsia.

I tend to agree with you and would rather just deliver, although obviously I'm not an expert. Is that same OB on call for the whole weekend, or will it be someone different tomorrow? You could always call again and ask to talk to the OB to see what they think about just having the babies.

I would definitely go in if you have any kind of new/worsening symptoms like increased swelling, changes in vision, headaches, decreased fetal movement, etc.

  • well, i had the boys because of mild pre-eclampsia. it wasn't dangerous yet, but i was in the hospital for monitoring because of it. when i was admitted, my level was 410. a couple of days later, it was 1196, and they still didn't deliver me for another four days (when it was mostly due to my misery.)

soooo, yeah, they probably should have admitted you, but i wouldn't worry too much just yet.

(ps - i just looked at my med records. i didn't actually memorize those numbers! ha ha!)

  • Definitely go back for any new symptoms and you may want to ask DH to get you a home BP monitor. That may be hyper-vigilant, but could also help you with your peace of mind.

  • I would be worried too.

I have no idea what my protein level was, but I had my regular weekly ob appt when I was 37w2d..doc said my protein was high & to come back in the next day.  The next day I went in, my protein was higher & I had my c-section about 4 hours later.

Is the doc you saw on call this weekend?  Can you call & tell them your worries?

  • Thanks everyone.  Yes, I believe the doc who already sent me home is on call for the weekend (at least on Thursday my usual doc told me that "Dr. so-and-so is on call this weekend...).  That's why I was concerned about going into the weekend, because I don't think talking to the same doc about my concerns would do anything.  Also was concerned because I had never had any protein in my urine before Thursday, and it had actually gotten worse just in the time that I was at the doc that day.

I'm feeling a little better now (emotionally) that I just have tomorrow to wait and then an NST on Monday.  I'll also meet with my usual doc then so we'll see what happens.  I'll let her know that I'm concerned about waiting it out at this point.
