High blood pressure after pregnancy?

I am still in the hospital and at first my b/p was nice and low (110/68) and has steadily increased ever since (127, 138, 157). I did have high b/p at the very end of my pregnancy but no pre-e.

Just wondering if this happened to anyone else. Normally (non-preg), my b/p is about 117/70 or so.

Just makes me nervous (which does not help) but I will not know anything until they check again in the morning.

No symptoms of high b/p (headaches, etc.) so far.

Thanks!

Re: High blood pressure after pregnancy?

  • You can develop postpartum preeclampsia during the first 6 weeks pp, I believe.

Are they checking your urine for protein or doing any labs or anything? (Not sure if that's what you meant by them checking in the morning.)

It's basically manged the same way pp as it is during your pregnancy, with BP meds and mag if needed.

I hope things settle down on their own. Keep us posted.

  • I drank 2 pitchers of water and by 5am my pressure was back to normal. They think I was just dehydrated...all is well. Yay!!!!!
  • Yes. My blood pressure began to rise at the end of my pregnancy, and is still high. The nurse at my office says it can take up to 2 months to regulate itself. I wouldn't worry. I'm on Procardia, a med that is safe to breastfeed on.
  • Yes, mine got even higher after delivery, as high as 150/101 .....(yikes) after delivery and took two solid weeks to come down to 120/70. It was very scary.
