2nd Trimester

Anyone read "Skinny ***: Bun in the Oven?"

So I got this book for Christmas and read the first few chapters last night. I am curious about other's thoughts, but this book is scaring the crap out of me! Maybe it's  because I am still at the beginning, but all it is so far is fear, fear fear. Did anyone like this book? Follow what they are suggesting (no sugar, no milk, etc)? If so, how is it going? Did you drastically change your diet during your pregnancy? Just wanting your thoughts!

Thanks!

  • I have no idea what book you're talking about but what's their rationale for no sugar and no milk. Sounds sketchy to me. Don't fool with your diet during pregnancy (other than to make healthier - but not drastic - choices)!

  • Basically, they say that refined sugar has terrible effects on the baby's development and that it is not natural for humans to drink cow's milk and that cow's milk takes calcium away from our bones. If what they are saying is true, I think we are all doomed Smile
  • I think I will stick with my Drs. recommendations and not some random book that may or may not have any medical background. My Dr said NO dieting, follow healthy eating habits that include milk, cheese, veggies, meats, and fruit.
  • In the typical American's diet (high protein) cow's milk can just add more protein which can take away calcium. I don't know if that's what they're saying or not. But I agree with pp - don't do anything drastic, just eat as healthily as possible. Too much sugar isn't good for anyone, but it's fine in moderation.

  • If its like the skinny b*tch regular book they advocate a complete vegan diet right? Sorry I like meat and I am skinny and healthy. lol

  • Yup I read it. That is kind of their "style" to be very umm frank in their books. It didnt scare or surprise me because I was a Vegan before getting pregnant (I have since lapsed back into Lacto-vegetarianism). I have also read their other books. You need to realize that the authors are Vegans and that they support and recommend a vegan diet (all the time, not just for pregnancy).

Yes people are not really made to drink cow's milk. Just like a baby calf would not flourish and grow by drinking human breast milk.  Cow's milk is designed by nature to take a tiny baby calf and turn it into a 500 pound cow in a very short time. None of this surprises or scares me. I am a vegetarian right now, and although I do eat dairy, I cant make myself drink milk (ew). I fully intend to revert back to Veganism someday soon though. I do believe its the healthiest and most humane way to live.

  • I'm definitely not bashing!  But I wouldn't do anything like that during my pregnancy.  I want my baby to get everything it needs

It is certainly possible and easy even to get "everything your baby needs" by following a vegan diet. I was a vegan for over a year before getting pregnant, and my blood panel (done prior to the pregnancy) was completely normal and healthy. Not lacking in anything, not even protein. It is completely do-able, and healthy.

  • I read the regular Skinny B book right before I got pregnant.  I think that it made my morning sickness months way worse because I couldn't stop thinking about the all the horrible things they write about.  Everything made me sick for a long time.  We tried giving up dairy, but we substituted with soy products and found out that can lead to reproductive problems.  We were already having trouble TTC so we quit that.  We just try to eat as naturally and healthy as possible, without going to overboard.

  • I was vegan before getting pregnant and unfortunately due to my morning sickness had to revert to meat for protein (it was the only protein that sounded good). However I still do not eat dairy. There is a lot of information out there if you do the research on cow's milk, it has been linked to many diseases, especially in children. Keep in mind a lot of the information we are fed saying "milk does a body good" comes from the Dairy Farmers Association and the like.

Although I personally liked the book, I would recommend doing more research than just that book then you can make a more informed decision about what will work for you.

  • Yep, I got the book for Christmas thinking it would be a cute/funny approach to showing you a healthy way to eat, help plan a couple meals and not completely scare the crap out of you...wrong! I'm already an organic only eater (we buy all our meat and most produce from our neighbor's farm) and I was just looking for a few fabulous pointers, what I got out of it was that these chicks are a little intense.
